My report is not as exhaustive as Matthew Hunter's--I didn't take notes.
From his report, however, it seems that our two signings were quite similar,
at least as for as what Jordan said.
I had several questions prepared, and, surprisingly, had all but one
answered. Of course, only two of those questions really impact plot and
stuff, so...
My first question: "Was the Aes Sedai who initiated the Pact of Rhuidean
from the Age of Legends?" (From TSR).
Jordan: (Pause)"No." (Pause)"No, she was not from the Age of Legends."
My reason for asking had to do with the Oath Rod theory about agelessness
and such.
Next two questions were essentially the same, just about different
characters: Had he always known the size and importance of the role of Fain
and Cadsuane?
Answer: Yes.
He went on to repeat what he has said before--knowing the end, knowing all
the major events, yadda yadda. However, what he did said that was new (at
least for me) was that the _order_ of events was _not_ set, and that he
allowed some fluidity for them. He made a remark about a cousin of his (who
is an engineer) who came over and saw all the notes and work and asked why
RJ hadn't created something called "critical flow charts" or some such. RJ
replied that the nature of the story was too complex for such linear
breakdown.
He also said the that the idea for the chapter icons was his wife's. They
sat down and decided (roughly) what they ought to look like, and hired an
artist to do them.
I asked if we would see Isam/Luc again. "RAFO."
RJ was very personable and seemed to genuinely enjoy the interaction with
the fans. I was disappointed, however, by how few questions there
were--most people simply stood there silently while he signed. I was also
surprised by how few people seemed to know about the newsgroup, the FAQ, and
the Compleat Index.
There were a number of people there who were only partway through the series
(although I guess we _all_ are only partway through the series!) and many
had not yet read the book.
Like Matthew Hunter (see his post), I was surprised by the candor of RJ's
remarks regarding Sweet's covers. At least we know he is just as
exasperated by them as we are. If only Michael Whelan and Jordan had been
able to work a deal out--man. Talk about poster-worthy and collectible art.
OK. I have to work now. I'll try to respond to any questions or gripes
about the report.
Michael Martin

He also mentioned the fact that Fain is essentially his wildcard, a character
that is outside the structure of the work and can therefore act
totally unpredictably.

Critical paths, actually. The idea is to identify what absolutely has to
happen before a set of outcomes can occur so that you can plan accordingly. I
had a vision of him inputting his plot into Microsoft Project.
When I reached the signing table, I asked him if he had a better idea now how
many novels there would be than he might have had previously, knowing it was a
lame question, but he answered it politely. He said he knew there would be at
least three more, and that he generally finds himself with twice as much
planned for a novel as he can pull off in 700 pages, which happened with the
new one. This suggested to me that 5-6 more books would not be surprising.
I didn't stay too long, but I had a good time, and just wish he had stopped in
Columbus as well.

If you all want more questions asked, how about recommending ones that
will not be definite RAFO and have not been asked before.
How about someone asking him if Verin did something to Morgase 20-odd
years ago that concealed her true channelling ability? Ever since LOC,
where we learned that Verin was the one who helped Morgase on her one
attempt to touch the True Source, I've been suspecting that Morgase is
more powerful than anyone realizes. I've been more suspicious ever since
reading about Verin's little compulsion trick.
I wish I would have known you were there cause I was too. I throughly
enjoyed it. I got my pic taken, got a couple of books signed, and I seemed
to be the only one who really drove a long ways. My one person road trip
from Indy to Dayton was fun. I also asked RJ the age old question: If you
love your wife so much and place her on this pedistal you seem to do, why are
all the women in WoT pains in the butt? Answer: (and this is
paraphrasing)They aren't. I was raised in a family of very strong women. I
was taught that if a woman was other than strong, they were boring. Someone
who wasn't strong was only good for a few days. A woman that is strong
challenges you. The women in WoT are just strong women. (that is extremely
paraphrasing it, sorry) I thought RJ was great. He was really getting into
it. I really had a great time although I didn't know anyone there.

You must have been really close to me cause I remember him saying that
around the time I was in line *bonks self*
But Morgase really CAN'T channel worth a damn. It's not just that
others can't sense her ability. Remember when the seanchan attacked the
whitecloaks? In a morgase point of view she makes a comment about how weak
she is and how the channeling going on nearby must be powerful in order for
someone as weak as her to be able to sense it.

I think RJ said all Myrddraal are male.

Explained in tPoD (in part at least).

I believe RJ said 'yes' to this once. Also, there was speculation in the

IMO, she was a DF before she died. I also think she killed herself to

:
Most likely orders.

This has bugged me ever since LoC. Peeve: we see the scene from Nyn's
POV, so we don't really know what exactly they search parameters are.
According to the dialogue, the first search was for 'something to convince
the Hall to support Rand'. When they ended up in the Tower storeroom,
they (very stupidly IMO) changed their search to 'a ter'angreal not in the
Tower'. We don't know whether the second search still had the 'support
Rand' condition.

I'd sign it.

Where is the ref for Merana? And it seems the Setalle Anan ref was a red
herring... she was simply in the Tower when Zarya ran away.
: 34. How does the Oath rod work? If you remove all oaths, without

We would know the answer if RJ had extended that scene a few more pages...
: 37. Where are the Duopotamian girls formerly under the tutalage of

With Egwene now, though two of their AS escorts are missing.
: 39. So what's the deal with Perrin & his immortal soul mentioned

His soul is being endangered by the 'enemy worse than the Seanchan'.
: 40. Can Cenn Buie channel? What about other Duopotamians?

: 41. What was the extra bit? The kiss? The bonding? The compulsion?
The kiss. It should be possible to bond and compel without it.

I suspect not; I frankly don't see how the Bowl of the Winds is going to
convince the Tower to do diddley squat for Rand, given they used it,
apparently successfully, without Rand or any Ash'aman. Now, it may be
causing some funky side effects, but only the Seanchan and Ash'aman are

I wonder if whatever item that's in the Tower (that they never actually
found, right? They gave up on looking for it because it was in the Tower
and they knew they couldn't get to it) will turn up later. Perhaps after
Egwene & co. get the Tower back, maybe Elayne will go poking around in the
storerooms to see what she can see, and all of a sudden come
upon...something.
That would be interesting.
She and Nyn go to the Tower and end up in a storeroom full of ter'angreal,
right? So they assume that whatever they're looking for is a ter'angreal.
(It probably is.) But I can't remember if the "bring SAS to Rand"

Far too subtle to be a bluff. When Rand blasts Kari, she says 'thank

Maybe what they _thought_ they needed wasn't what they _really_ needed. I
mean, in order for this "need" thing to work there'd have to be some sort of
governing intelligence in TAR, but putting that aside for the moment, they
focused on "need" assuming that they would be led to something that would
"bring the SAS to Rand." Maybe instead they focused on "need" and were led
to the thing that would help the entire world, tBotW. Then again, maybe
something in that *'angreal cache _will_ bring the SAS to Rand, albeit in a
very roundabout fashion. Take a look at Mat: the Finns told him he had to
go to Rhuidean to marry the Dot9M, give up half the light...etc, and that was
five books ago and it hasn't happened yet. Like Rand thinking about Laman
cutting down Avendoraldera, bringing the Aiel across the dragonwall so he
could be born on Dragonmount. Very roundabout, and difficult to link
together into a cohesive chain or related events unless you specifically
_know_ what you're looking for.

Cite please? I know Rand believes his hair/eye color comes from his

And if RJ can mess up the hair/eye color of Moiraine, we shouldn't be
