The dice in Mat's head. No one else has them, yet they seem to appear
whenever something important is about to happen. But, as someone else
pointed out, they are not necessarily directly related to his luck. In
short, they are not really "dice." He just feels something strange in
his head and calls it dice because he has no better analogy for the
feelings. He knows dice, so he calls the feeling dice.
A couple of facts have me thinking of a theory that I have not found
here:
1. The "head dice" started after going through the 2nd door.
2. His new memories appeared after going through the door.
3. The Finn in the second door live off of memories (I believe a term
like "rummaging through my head" was used somewhere).
4. The Finn can read the pattern and therefore know when particularly
interesting things will occur.
5. All the extra memories that Mat has come from people who also went
through that door.
6. It's been surmised that Mat will have to take out an eye to prevent
the Finn from seeing through his eyes, which would imply that they
have access to his head.
There are more, but let me get to the point. It's not dice in his
head. It's the Finn in there making noise while watching important
parts of Mat's life.
Mat's memories are built from bits and pieces of other mens' memories,
some of which happened *while the man was dying* (i.e. AFTER they went
through the doorway). This implies that the Finn DO have access to a
guy's brain for the rest of his life if they go through the doorway.
So this means that the Finn are in Mat's head at least part-time. The
Finn seem to prefer important, life-defining moments, and they can
read the pattern, so since they kind of know what's about to happen,
they always "peek in" during important times, rummaging around &
soaking up his experiences as they happen, and they do it at crucial
points in Mat's life.
No one else has "dice" in their head because no one else living has
been through that second doorway. I'd bet that all the men who's
memories Mat has also felt the "dice" feeling in their heads, although
they may have actually known what the feeling really was since use of
the doorway was common and the rules and regulations regarding them
were better known.
Anyway, I am new here (reader of the book & FAQ since ~1996, but new
to the newsgroup), so maybe this is an old discussion.
I also probably got some of my "facts" wrong, so correct them please.
But can someone tell me if my underlying idea of the "dice" being the
Finn is good or bunk?
Thanks,
EJ
The dice in Mat's head are a signal that he's about to hit one of the
forks in the road of his life. He's going to meet someone, say
something, do something which will influence everything that comes
after. The best example is his accidental marriage to Tuon. I don't
think the Finn are directly in his head. By entering the doorway,
they are able to look into his past and future as they are somewhat
outside of Mat's time/dimention/whatever sci-fi example you choose.
They aren't linear. That's why they can answer questions about the
future. They can see it already.

I wonder, however, if they can see more of Mat's pivotal moments
because he is ta'veren. Doesn't this give his pivotal moments more
Pattern cred?
Also, don't they already know that he's eventually on his way to
visit? How will they be ready for him?

Hehe, if you already know your future or the future of your opponent,
you don't need to prepare since you know who will win and how. And you
obviously can't change the outcome, because if you could, your knowledge
of the future would have been wrong in the first place. :) A paradox.
That's why the mere concept of knowing the future is absurd.
Or it could mean you'll always win. But then they didn't really win in
trying to kill Mat, which means either they don't know the future, or
they can't change the outcome (they can't always win).
hmmm... confusing... :)
