Diana Rigg and daughter Rachael Stirling to star in Doctor Who

Mother and daughter Dame Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling are to star
side by side in a Doctor Who adventure to be broadcast next year.

It is the first time the pair have worked together on screen.

The actresses will play "a mother and daughter with a dark secret"
alongside Matt Smith, as the Doctor, and new companion Jenna-Louise
Coleman.

Filming began this week at Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff.

Dame Diana Rigg, who played Emma Peel in The Avengers in the 1960s,
will play "a Yorkshire local".

She said: "The first time Rachie and I will be working together is on
an episode of Doctor Who specially written for us by Mark Gatiss. How
lucky is that?"

Rachael Stirling said she was "looking forward to the madness of
Doctor Who enormously".

"Mark Gatiss has written a gift of a script and an on-screen
relationship between Ma and I that is truly delicious.

"We have never before worked together because the offers have not been
tempting, but when such a funny and original script comes through you
know the time has come."

Stirling's TV work includes Women In Love and Tipping the Velvet.

Doctor Who's executive producer Steven Moffat said: "Dame Diana Rigg,
Rachael Stirling and a Mark Gatiss script - a combination of talents
you could only get in Doctor Who! Frankly, I'm terrified already!"

2013 will be the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, which was first
broadcast in November 1963.

Hopefully like Honor Blackman, former Avenger and Bond Girl,
Diana can keep her end up.

Honor was in Goldfinger. I don't recall any Doctor Who connection in those
James Bond movies.

Learn something every day.
I didn't know she had a daughter.
The name Rachael Stirling means nothing to me.
I may get curious and see what shows she has been in.

Her IMDb bio sez, in part:

Her father, Archibald Stirling is the nephew of Colonel Sir David Stirling,
founder of the Special Air Service (SAS).

Sounds like how Diana Rigg was written out of The Avengers, when her
pilot husband returned.

It also says that Theater of Blood was performed on stage, and she performed
the role her mother had in the movie.

Let me put it to you this way.

First both Honor and Diana were featured in The Avengers.

Then they made their James Bond Appearances.

finally they make a DW appearance.

Clear?

Not really. They get cast because they are well liked and fondly remembered
from an original and innovative tv show that was far ahead of its time.
Diana Rigg was cast in On Her Majesty's Secret Service because she was at
the height of her popularity with American television audiences and they
had just cast another non-star as James Bond, someone even less well known
than Sean Connery had been prior to Doctor No. The guy was a model in
Australia, for gawd's sake.

It's less of a coincidence than you suggest because The Avengers was not
shown on American television prior to Diana Rigg's episodes. The episodes
didn't even premiere in USA till decades later, and we never even got the
first season, apparently in such poor shape and partly destroyed that
it'll never be shown again on tv.

If Doctor Who lasts long enough, anyone who ever thought about acting in
the UK will make an appearance on it. But if an actress of quality like
Diana Rigg is available, why not cast her?

Fortunately, the James Bond producers had enough sense not to cast
Linda Thorson, who is not remembered fondly from The Avengers.

Speaking of the Steed Girls, look at the end of League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen: Century 2009.

Oh, and as a big fan of Ms. Rigg, I'll make sure not to miss her episode of
DW. After all, she is very good in playing villains, like you can see in
Theater of Blood (my favourite Vincent Price movie).

She was already living in England when she was cast. What does that have
to do with not being cast into a James Bond movie?

Your followups are utterly pointless.

Sorry to be harsh but if too many big name bed blockers keep taking roles
then what happens with the next generation?
