S.H.I.E.L.D. Scoop: Meet the Members of Joss Whedon's New ABC Pilot!
by Kimberly Roots

S.H.I.E.L.D. your eyes if you don’t want to be spoiled, because we’ve
got some cool info about Joss Whedon‘s forthcoming project. TVLine has
obtained casting details regarding the ABC pilot, which is helmed by
the Avengers writer/director and based on a peacekeeping group that
appeared in both the summer blockbuster and various Marvel comics.

The live-action pilot’s title is an acronym for Strategic Homeland
Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, a covert
organization run by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the movie. Buffy
creator Whedon is tentatively set to direct the pilot; he’s also
slated to write the series with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa
Tancharoen.

Among those fighting the good fight:

SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and
confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and
charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,”
he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a
bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core
soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot.
But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through
training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each
other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by
their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry,
he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

In other words, they're money whores who want to milk every last dime
from the name recognition of the word "Avengers," but they don't want to
use any big names. And while this show could sink or swim without any
Avengers tie-in, they're forcing one on it because they're money whores
who see more potential that way, at least short-term. And they're
probably right.

Maybe they should cast the actress who played Skye in Terra Nova ... then
again maybe she doesn't want to be name-typecast. ;-)

It's not SHIELD without Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Clay Quatermain
Jimmy Wu and The Contessa Valeria Allegra de Fontaine. At least
Smallville had the sense to use existing heroes, even if they were
updated to the present and aged backwards to their youth.

There was a Dum Dum Dugan in Captain America and in Iron Man 2 it was
implied that SHIELD had been founded by Stark's father a long time
ago. Perhaps Joss Whedon can find a way to show flashbacks of the
early days. David Hasslehoff could play Nick Fury's father. (On
Earth 616, Nick Fury's father -the original Nick Fury- looks like
David Hasselhoff.)

To be fair, it's possible that some members of the A-team will make
guest appearances or cameos, but we'll have to wait and see. As it
stands, I'll be taking a pass on this one, though.

If they do Strange Tales 138 with the flying cars, I'll check it out.

The A-Team!?! Wow, Hannibal, BA, and co.! If it's the originals, then it
might make the show worth watching (although it might be "difficult" to
get George Peppard). ;-)

Because he was resurrected as Hannibal Smith in another cinema life.

He would have been better off staying as a dead Jedi rather than taking
the job to create a supposed Hannibal Smith in another idiotic
in-name-only movie remake of an old TV series ... followed by a role in
the even worse so-called "Battleship" which had almost nothing to do with
the board game it was meant to be "based on". :-(
