OK, one major flaw in "Revolution" is that everyone
looks nice.  The hair is combed, cut and in some
cases even has product in it.  And the google guy
is fat.  Folks, after 15 years of famine, there
will be no fat people !  Google guy needs to get on
the stairmaster for four hours per day and cut his
calories to 500/day.

In 'The Walking Dead", Rick and the bunch look like
they have been on the run for months.  They are
dirty, their hair is long and ragged, their
clothing has holes and nasty stains in it, etc.
Even Hershel has lost weight, not including his leg.

Just my $0.02,
Lynn

There are other land holdings possible besides small family farms that suffer from in-economies of scale. Large latifundia could maximize the land farmed with a smaller landforce.

You'd have a large population of "useless" workers, with nothing to do after
their tweeters died, that the militia could put on farms and say "work or die"

The Amish don't say that, but they manage quite well without most of the powered
machinery consider necessary

The militia goes for the important stuff: food, medicine, guns and ammo. Then
the militia says "we can feed you but only if you work on the farms and other
important stuff...don't want to work either leave or we will hunt you down and
kill you

it won't be quick or painless, but it would be aided by the fact that a large
percentage of the population wouldn't have the skill necessary to survive on
their own

Famine isn't exactly the word.  The food distribution networks were
crashed, and farmers lost access to fertilizers and farm equipment.
Mass starvation should have resulted.  (And in fact was necessary for
the nation to collapse.)

it's just a nit, but diesel engines don't necessarily depend in any way on
electricity, steam engines neither. We've seen a steam train, making a diesel
run on vegetable oil isn't difficult, so transportation didn't necessarily have
to be that disrupted. As to fertilizers, that would probably be a problem but
there is still manure from cows, pigs and chickens so a smallish farm could work

I've seen them on dump trucks as recently as the 80's. I suppose in a pinch, as
impractical as it would be, having a small steam engine available as a pony
engine would work (or just as an external starter motor

I wonder if the first ones actually had glow plugs?
