The characters of SGU
A Watcher
Chloe. I think the characters are acting more like real people than the
characters of SG1, SGA and most TV sci fi shows. What's wrong with
that? It's a refreshing change. They said SGU would be different.

The problem with the Chloe character is that she is boring. She's a whiner
and uninteresting. Ditto for Eli and most of the characters. They're
boring. People behaving like *real* people also aren't that interesting to
watch.....<g>

Except they are not acting like real people. They're acting like the
cliches that television presents to us as real people. I don't know
any real people as useless and unlikable as these characters.
In real life people do not all scream in fear and run around in
circles in a panic during an emergency. Most of them freeze in place
and the more alert and/or capable figure out what to do and spring
into action sooner. On TV and in films, everyone screams uselessly
and runs around in circles knocking things over in a panic.
These are not characters acting like real people. These are
characters acting like cliches from soap operas.

I'd guess that it's a matter of taste. I happen to prefer competent,
sympathetic heroes. That's why I was attracted to the earlier series.
Since this series features mainly incompetent, unsympathetic
anti-heroes - well, it's hardly surprising that I find this show less
enjoyable.
I will grant that they are making the show that they said they would
make. They said "don't look for square-jawed heroes" and so on.

Well, I've known a few, but they're a distinct minority.

This show in particular seems to be lacking in sensible
characters. And I still miss the humor when things get hairy that I
always liked in SG1.

That's a good point. Not acting like "capable, smart, strong, super"
people "makes it seem like" they're acting like "real" people, yes, you're
right.

Unfortunately that seems to be the easiest thing for most writers to
do which is why I guess they go for those old cliches.

Agreed. So far the only one with any sense of humor is Eli. That's
something that the show desperately needs especially if they are going
for a more realistic portrayal of their situation. Something to bring
a bit of levity to what is really a quite dire situation.

Yes! Jack and Daniel in particular were often *hilarious* when things got
hairy.
I miss that sort of friendly/snarky interaction.
