Syfy Prepping Space Dramas From Jason Blum, Gale Anne Hurd (Exclusive)
by Lacey Rose

Syfy is bulking up its scripted efforts.

At Wednesday night's upfront presentation to Madison Avenue buyers,
the NBCUniversal-owned cable network will announce a suite of new
development projects. Included in the mix are space based series from
the producers of Alphas and Smallville as well as Paranormal
Activity's Jason Blum and The Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd.

The efforts expand the network's existing development slate, which
already houses the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Proof and Blake's 7,
directed by Casino Royale's Martin Campbell.

If ultimately ordered to series, these entries would join a schedule
that currently includes Haven, Warehouse 13, Being Human and upcoming
big swing Defiance as well as Ron Moore's recently added drama series
Helix.

Below is a look at seven of the scripted projects Syfy has put into
development:

Dominion (formerly known as Legion)
Twenty years after evil angels descended from heaven to lay waste to
the human souls they felt God had favored over them, a reluctant
"savior" must arise to protect Vega, the last remaining stronghold of
humanity. The savior has more to fear than just angels, as the elites
of this new society conspire to gain power for themselves. The Bold
Films/Sony Pictures Television-produced effort is being penned by Vaun
Wilmott (Sons of Anarchy), with Scott Stewart (Defiance) tapped to
direct and produce.

Orion
The space opera centers on Orion, an adventurous female relic hunter
who tracks down valuable artifacts while trying to piece together her
past. Set amid an intergalactic war pitting humans against a
terrifying alien race, Orion must decide whether to use her abilities
to save herself or commit to the cause and unearth long hidden
artifacts that could free all of humanity from a horrible fate. Ron
Milbauer and Terri Hughes Burton (Alphas) will write and executive
produce, with George Krstic and Ryuhei Kitamura on board as
co-executive producers. F.J. Desanto will serve as asupervising
producer on the UCP project.

Sojourn
The first detective ever in space is tasked with investigating a
murder on a starship -- headed to colonize another planet - and
instead becomes embroiled in a vast conspiracy involving a mysterious
terrible crime dating back to the original launch of the ship 50 years
ago. Phil Levens (Smallville) will write, with Blum (Paranormal
Activity) on board to produce the Lionsgate entry.

Clandestine
After a clan of bandits are nearly destroyed and left for dead by
Coalition forces, they take refuge in the nearest safe haven, a
derelict Coalition starship floating in space. Once onboard, they
masquerade as Coalition officers while continuing their criminal ways
- until they stumble upon a shocking realization about the true
nature of the Coalition. Todd Stashwick and Dennis Calero will write,
with Hurd (The Walking Dead) and John Shiban (Hell on Wheels) attached
to executive produce the UCP project.

Infinity
When an alien armada is sighted in the region of Pluto, the Earth
government turns to a young billionaire industrialist -- who has the
only ship ready for interstellar travel -- to greet the aliens and
avoid a catastrophe. Powered by secret alien technology discovered on
Earth in the 1960s, the ship engages in a firefight that sends them
spinning through a wormhole into an uncharted region of space. Lost in
the universe, the team struggles to survive as they encounter new
planets and alien species, searching for a way back home. Javier
Grillo-Marxuach (Lost) will write the Berman/Braun produced entry from
Universal Television.

Silver Shields
When his father is slain by assassins connected to the government of
the large nearby city of Pont Royal, farm boy Caymer journeys there to
continue his father's legacy as a member of the local police force --
and to solve the mystery of his fathers death. He discovers that his
simple country view on life is at odds with the big city, filled with
orcs and other magical creatures. Robert Hewitt Wolfe (Alphas) will
write and executive produce the UCP effort alongside producer Aaron
Kaplan.

Shelter
A massive meteorite is headed toward Earth, forcing 30,000 hand-picked
humans to live underground in a government funded shelter in order to
start a new society. What begins as a Utopia quickly succumbs to the
old human faults and jealousies as certain members of society create
alliances to gain favor and power. Meanwhile, things on the surface
are not what they seem. Humans slowly realize that this event may have
been fated and the survivors meant for a greater purpose in rebooting
life on Earth. Bruce Joel Rubin (Deep Impact) will write and executive
produce the UCP project with writer/co-executive producer/writer Ari
Rubin.

I doubt Syfy has the funds to produce more than a couple of those, but
but all of them except Shelter sound like fun.

Star Wars/Firefly/etc. (that's a really common trope)

Star Wars. No doubt there'll be a wise old wizard he meets that mentors
him, then dies at the end of the first episode or the first half-season or
the first season, one of the three, leaving him to find his own path from
there. Plus an assortment of sidekicks, including a rogue/pirate and two
comical little droids^H^H^H^H^H^Helves.

Wasn't there a movie where angels descend to kill us all? This could be

It reminds me of a joke I once told about what there is to do on a ship
in flight between stars. (Murder mystery weekends with real murders.)

No. "The hero is a farm boy" does not equal "Star Wars". This is a
fantasy cop show.

No, not at all. More like the City of Ember. Or Fallout.

"Legion"? This started out as an official remake, though maybe it's
morphed since then

Exactly. Well, almost exactly, because I don't think Siffy has the
money (or guts) to make even one of them well.

On the up side, 4 of those shows are actually set in outer space. Isn't
that what many/most of the Syfy complainers were claiming that the network
lacked?

Yeah, I'll watch all of them. Do they always throw in so many titles each year? I guess I haven't been paying attention to their new lineups.
These would be good as a mini-series, if they go for all year programming.

last years Syfy development post from David:
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.tv/msg/ddac326f6b5df8ec?hl=en&dmode=source

28 new shows in development including 9 drama series. Only one made it to
the air: DEFIANCE. The other 8 were:

Rewind - Rewind revolves around a team of military field operatives
and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel
back in time to alter events and change the future -- and avoid a
devastating terrorist attack.

The Adjustment Bureau - In this drama, based on the hit movie starring
Matt Damon, guardian angel-type agents work to keep the world
according to The Plan.

High Moon - Based on the novel, The Lotus Caves, by John Christopher,
this imaginative, out-of-this-World Series explores a world where the
countries of Earth have established colonies to mine the Moon's
resources.

Untitled Booster Gold Project - Based on the best-selling DC
Entertainment Comic, this is the story of a washed-up athlete from the
future who travels back to the present in hopes of becoming the
greatest superhero of all time.

Grave Sight - From the best-selling author of True Blood, this
Charlaine Harris book series follows Harper Connelly - a young woman
with a unique gift.

Seeing Things - Based on the comic Grey Legion from Platinum Studios,
after a cop meets his violent demise, he returns as a ghost to close
his last case.

Defender - In the aftermath of an intergalactic war between humans and
transhumans, the starship Defender, populated by a combustible mix of
former enemies, is sent on a seemingly simple goodwill mission, which
turns into a fight for their lives and for the safety of the Universe
at large.

The Family - For generations, an alien family has hid amongst humans
in plain sight using their advanced intellect to carve out a life for
themselves as their family grew.

I dunno. I can handle mysterious crimes. I can even handle terrible

This one threw a few STAR TREK: TNG scripts in a blender and hit "Chop."

Okay, props to Syfy for coming up with a few space-based options here,
but I hope that the executions are much better than the sophomoric
writing of the synopses.

Heck, *I* was complaining that *all* of television lacked them, so kudos

I don't see any connection to TNG at all. Although it does sound kind

Why are alien races always "terrifying" in these things? I seriously think
somebody needs to look up the definition of that word. Aliens tend to be
more wierd than terrifying in these shows, at least when they're not jumping
out at you from nowhere.

Combining two genres. This could be interesting, if it's well done.

Farm boy saves the city. More fantasy than science fiction, but it could be
decent if it's well done. Another one that combines two genres.

What the network lacks is science fiction. Except for Eureka, which is now

I don't see it. The only "space" one I like is "Infinity" ("Orion"
*might* be OK...) - "Dominion", esp., sounds awful.

Meanwhile, I like the sound of "Silver Shields", but I generally seem to
prefer straight fantasy anyway...

No, this seems different. Nearly all "meteor" flicks are about blowing
up/deflecting/"beating" the meteor so it doesn't hit.

This is more like "the meteor strike on Earth is a fait accompli - what
do you do about the *aftermath*..."

I actually think this general concept is intriguing, though not
necessarily the specifics of the series concept outlined above.

Honestly, a good working of this concept would maybe be better suited
for a "miniseries" treatment...

The O.P. probably meant just the "cooped up in a town-in-a-bottle until the
social fabric goes to hell in a handcart" aspects, with the bottling of the
people up being an outside imposition, without the cause of that imposition
having to be the same.

As for the "things on the surface are not as they seem", that sounds like
throwing in a dash of LOST/Revolution/etc. into the mix -- does J. J.
Abrams have one of his fingers in this particular pie, by any chance? :-/

That's easy to fix. Just rename it "Thor's Hammer". Then there's *no* way

From that one-paragraph summary I get the impression that this all

I don't. I think she's deeply stupid, but I also think she's evil and

stupid at all times as she is. However, when she claims to have said

The character Sam McCloud was a Deputy U.S. Marshal from Taos, New Mexico.

McCloud was from Taos, New Mexico. Even now it has less than 6000
people in less than 6 square miles.

The original version, Coogan, was from a small town in Arizona.

Vicious lie! McCloud was not a rip off of the Clint Eastwood movie
Coogan's Bluff. It was a completely new and original idea, despite
numerous self conscious references in the script getting McCloud's
home wrong in many episodes.

It's mere coincidence that Universal film and Universal television had
almost exactly the same idea, and one followed the other.

All joking aside, Levinson and Link (Columbo) wrote the pilot with another
writer, but in the series, Herman Miller is credited with creating the
characters. Miller wrote Coogan's Bluff. I take it Universal lost a
lawsuit. IMDb doesn't show any screenplay credits for McCloud episodes.

Every time I see the movie, the funk theme for the dance club plays
over and over in my head for weeks after. "The Pigeon-Toed Orange Peel"

Sure they do
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064648/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_wr#writers
Click to the 'next' ep; unfortunately you have to scroll down and click
'full cast and crew' or 'more writer credits' every time. This new IMDb
format is going to finally get me to stop using it at all. Miller
doesn't get credit on the pilot, ironically enough, but starts getting
'characters' credit on ep 2 and through 45 (there were only 46 eps of
McCloud???), McCloud Meets Dracula (wtf???). The pilot is the *only*
time either Levinson or Link or Stanford Whitmore get a writing credit
on McCloud. None of the four got a credit on the reunion movie, which
sounds just awful - Senator McCloud in England avenging the murder of
his daughter or niece, depending on whom you believe, with all the old
regulars shoehorned in?

I meant I found Miller had a "characters created by" credit after the pilot.
Aside from the creator credit, I didn't find screenplays written by him.
Did I miss that he'd written an episode of the series?

Man, I think I watched The Return of Sam McCloud, but other than
disliking it (and not believing that Broadhurst ever got promoted
after McCloud wrecked his career if not his life), I don't remember
anything about it. The idea that McCloud could become senator was
not reasonable.

I think she genuinely believes in her distorted and objectively

that insecurity that she doesn't acknowledge?

I can't. I don't think they ever named or defined it. They just
described it as such.

Hmm. I looked that up before, but now I can only find that Coogan was
from a 'rural county' in Arizona. That could mean cities from 10,000
all the way down to 232.

Yes, hence the mistaken space connection.

I dunno. If and when reality finally hits her, she's a perfect candidate

Okay, fine. So she'll write a navel-gazing, self-pitying memoir, or
something. That might be even worse.

Oh hell, by the standards of New York or LA, Omaha is a small town, and it
has a population of over a million. Norfolk, NE is in a rural country -
it's population is over 20,000.
Sorry, I can't give you statistics on Arizona, I don't know of any "small
towns" there.

The problem is, the people who wrote that stuff were completely clueless to
what a small town actually is.

Neligh, NE, where I grew up, is a small town. Pop: 1,592 accroding to
www.city-data.com.
Saying someone is from a small town when you live in LA or New York, or
Washington DC or Miami, is not the same thing as saying someone is from a
small town when you actually live in a small town, or even a medium sized
city. It's all in the "eye of the beholder".
