So, with less than two months before the theater debut of "Changeling", any idea
what kind of promotions we can look forward to? Are you going to be dragged
kicking and screaming in front of TV cameras on talk shows?
Any other updates you can share?
Thanks,
Jan

I try never to get involved in my own life. Too much trouble.
In typical Joe-Luck, a number of options normally available aren't
because big events tend to be built around big names being able to
attend, and in this case Brad and Angie are off being parents, and
Clint is busy on Gran Torino, so that means a lot of the usual events
won't be done. To my knowledge, there won't be an LA premiere, for
instance...the only sort of premiere will be the NYFF screening.
There will be some industry screenings, however, and there will be
plenty of press requests...they're already coming in and more will
follow the closer we get to the debut.
But talk shows...nah, not at this point. Who wants to see a writer?

We do! Just not on Conan or whoever that guy is that's on after
Letterman (those two are really annoying and don't seem to let the
guests talk about what they came to talk about).

"We must all hear the universal call to like your neighbor just like
you like to be liked yourself." George W. Bush puts an interesting
twist on Jesus Christ's proverb: "Love thy neighbor." (Quote is from
the Financial Times)
His name is Craig Ferguson.
And I happen to find him very entertaining, though he'll probably never be a
headliner like Dave or Jay.
His monologues are often pretty compelling. Somewhat prepped, but still
leans to stream-of-consciousness ramblings. And his interview style is very
relaxed, often a refreshing change-up from the usual fare. His skill at
tweaking noses, coupled with that devilish twinkle in his eye makes it hard
not to like him. Ignore his occasional lame fill sketches - they're pretty
bad. But overall, Ferguson has a delightfully British (though he's
Scottish... now a naturalized U.S. citizen) way of keeping things on the
lighter side by not taking himself or his guests TOO seriously, regardless
of who they are (or THINK they are...).
I'll admit, for some he's something of an acquired taste. But so was Dave
Letterman, once upon a time. I actually enjoy Dave's show much less than I
once did in years long past when it was more "off-the-cuff."
Anyway, Ferguson is worth the effort, IMNSHO.

Too bad about no LA premiere! Have a good time in New York, though.
I see that Changeling/JMS have the cover story in the new "Creative
Screenwriting" magazine.

Obviously, we, your loyal fans would love to see you interviewed on a
nationally available television program. However, I believe there is a
strong business case for you to be interviewed in conjunction with
Changeling.
After more than twenty-years as a screenwriter, producer and show
runner in television, you have become an “overnight success.” Since
you have “just been discovered” interviews would be more likely. As an
A-list screenwriter, you probably command a lot more attention then
before.
We know that you are an articulate speaker from your countless
appearances on panels at conventions and your commentary on the DVDs.
You demonstrated this to a wider audience when you acquitted yourself
well at the Cannes Festival press interview.
The story behind your discovery of what happened to Christine Collins
and your writing of Changeling is compelling. Beyond that, your
background as an established writer in virtually all media, film,
television, radio, plays, newspapers, magazines, books and comic
books, in and of itself would make for a great interview.
Changeling’s North American premiere on October 4, 2008 at the New
York Film Festival is a target of opportunity for interviews with the
New York print, radio and television media. The New York Times,
multiple magazines, Charlie Rose Show, Late Night with David
Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Today Show, The Early Show, Good Morning
America, Live Regis & Kelly are all base in New York. Fresh Air with
Terry Gross (Philadelphia) and The Diane Rehm Show (Washington, DC)
are close enough to New York to be practical venues.
At the very least, I would hope that the New York Times, Charlie Rose,
Terry Gross and Diane Rehm would interview you.
Regardless, I hope that you have fun and a great adventure at the New
York Film Festival. I also hope that you will be able to visit with
fans in the New York area and that you will be able to announce one of
your special projects at the time.
By the way, it is only 31 days until the North American premiere of
Changeling at the New York Film Festival. Changeling will screen
Saturday, October 4 (9:15 PM), and Sunday, October 5 (11:15 AM); both
screenings at the Ziegfeld Theatre.
Program: http://www.filmlinc.com/nyff/program.html
Schedule: http://www.filmlinc.com/nyff/data/08_nyff_cal.pdf
General ticketing information
Tickets for the general public will go on sale Sunday, Sept. 7, at
12:00 noon at Avery Fisher Hall, corner of Columbus Avenue and 65th
St.; Monday, Sept. 8, online at http://www.filmlinc.com/ ; and on
Saturday, September 27 at the Ziegfeld Theater, 141 West 54th St.

Also a bit over-long. The other day, he had two guests, the Australian
star of "Fringe" and Nathan Fillion. I wanted to see what new show
Fillion was going to be promoting, so I turned it on. Ferguson's show
is an hour long, and he spent a total of 10 minutes with BOTH guests.
Not each, but combined.
They barely mentioned "Fringe" with the first guest, and with Fillion
they spent three minutes on "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog", two
minutes on something completely forgettable, and Fillion was only able
to get a fractional-second mention of whatever show he's going to be on
sometime this year - so fast, I didn't even catch the name of the show,
only that it's on ABC.

A celebrity-guest talk/interview show should be about the guest, not
the host. Carson knew this, Leno and Letterman mostly know this.
Ferguson, not so much apparently, and O'Brian not at all.

Slightly changing the question, who wants an excuse to show extracts
from popular tv shows? As well as the "Changeling" promo try taking
a tape/DVD with extracts from shows that you have written. The
Studio will have to arrange the copyright permissions.

Jan. 20, 2009 - the end of an error
Well, of course, it depends on the writer! ;-)
I remember seeing the writer of Juno on Letterman just before it was
released... but she was a babe and a former 'hooker' 8-)

Some folks may (and certainly do) equate the two, but there is a difference.

Bill,
I was originally going to post, "Me too!" In retrospect, I would love
to see JMS interviewed, but I would also like to see an semi-impromptu
fan-based reception for JMS in New York. Is there anyone on this group
from the New York area willing and able to pull such an event together
by October 4, 2008?
Dan Dassow
Dan, you're making quite an assumption there. JMS might not have a moment
free in his schedule for a fan-run reception. Heck, I don't have time to be
at one, and I'm not an A-list movie scriptwriter!
Amy,
Of course you are right, although it was a nice (albeit an
impractical) thought.
I wonder what we can do collectively to congratulate Joe. I huge card
signed by most of us probably would be impractical.

You're right! I stand corrected, and apologize.

Joe, Joe, Joe....
A good many of us can honestly say from experience that you're a
damned
entertaining guy, even without factoring in the advantage of being the
creator of our favorite SF show. Hell, it's not all about being a
performer. I'm a performer. I've done opera, operetta, Shakespeare,

basis. But I haven't one tenth your ability to just stand up in front

Universal about getting you on Leno or Letterman sometime in the next
few weeks. Honestly, it'll be good for "Changeling", and good for you,
too. (Hell, it would even be good for the WGA. Remember "Somebody

Or am I just echoing what your agent is already telling you? If I am

If you do a google search -- web or blog -- on my name, and sort date
to the most recent, you hit a lot of B5 stuff, some comics stuff, and
the like. You see very little on Changeling.
But if you do a search for Changeling for the same period, and sort
date, even though my name is all through those entries, almost none of
them showed up on the other Google search, even though Changeling and
my name were in the same areas and thus should have been sorted
equally.
It's almost as if Google is weighted to search in some areas, and
disregard others. Kind of a weird internet typecasting.
Whuzzup wit dat?
jms
Search engines generally rank on what searches lead to a certain result,
rather than simply how often a given word or phrase appears. If ten
people google your name, and eight click on a B5 result, and two on a
Changeling result, the B5 results will rank higher on subsequent
searches... the next time someone searches, they're likely to click on
the results they see first... and thus keep the B5 hits higher as the
Changeling hits fall down the list.
Since there were lots and lots of "JMS" searches that led to B5 long
before Changeling came around, B5 already had a significant head start.
People would need to search your name, then bypass the B5, the
Ghostbusters, the Murder, and everything else that comes up first, and
click the Changeling links, in order to move it up the ranks.
I don't think (just guessing, really, though a somewhat educated guess)
that most search engines distinguish names from any other part of speech
in a body of text. The occurrence of the word "the" is no more likely
to push a given search up the rankings than the occurrence of the word
"Joe" or "Straczynski" or "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".
The most important factor for any search is how useful the searchers
find it... thus the ones that are clicked more, get ranked higher, plain
and simple.
Guess - Google probably searches for one word and then searches the
results for the other words. Babylon 5 has a lot more websites than
Changeling so the index entries on "JMS" will reflect that. The
index for the word "Changeling" will filter out the Babylon 5 sites
leaving the news sites that mention Changeling. I have gained a
feeling that Google normally chooses the last word in the list as
the primary search word.
Andrew Swallow
It ain't the ranking...I mean it doesn't show up at all.
Try it. Go to blog search. Type in the name. Go for a search on
just entries in the last 24 hours, since that'll keep the number
small, sorted by date. You get lots of B5 hits, but almost no
Changeling hits.
Then try Changeling for the same 24 hour period. The Changeling hits
will very often have my name, but they never even showed UP on the
prior search. It ain't a ranking question, they simply aren't there.
Puzzling, that.
jms
A straight search on "Straczynski" produced 632,000 results.
"Changeling" was mensioned on the 5th entry = JMSNews
Your asteroid was 40th.
No more mentions of Changeling in the top 10 pages.
I stopped there since it would have taken me too long to go
through the other 63,200 pages of results.
"Straczynski 1 September 2008" produced 131,000 results.
First "Changeling" mention was JMSNews at 50th.
No more mentions of Changeling in the top 10 pages.
"Straczynski 1 September 2008 Changeling" produced 1,010 results.
All entries on the top 2 pages mentioned both "Changeling" and
"Straczynski".
Note: JMSNews was 12th.
"Straczynski Changeling" produced 25,400 results.
All entries on the top 2 pages mentioned both "Changeling" and
"Straczynski".
Note: JMSNews was 13th.
The Wikipedia entries were 1st and 2nd.

I just did a blog search...went to "Advanced Blog Search"...typed
"straczynski" into the first field ("with all of the words")...asked for 100
results...changed the date to 28 September through 29 September...and hit
"Search Blogs." The fourth entry came up titled "Changeling," and it was a
legitimate, non-B5 listing (meaning it wasn't a post from this newsgroup
talking about the film). There were three more Changeling-only (no B5 in the
content) listings on the page, two of them in foreign languages.
I cannot explain the strange ways of Google, but I'd certainly suggest
searching again, possibly changing something you're doing (capitalization?
which field you're using to search?).
It's rather more complicated than most people appreciate. Search
engines don't necessarily do a complete text search and index of every
web page. Instead, there are "hidden" areas of a web page that are
the primary things they use. A lot of clever people (not me) make a
living "optimizing" web pages for search engines. I rather suspect
that, in this case, they optimized these pages for searches on the
"big names" (no offense).
I searched just on Michael Straczynski to see if the first name was
being presented sometimes as Joe or something rather than just the J.
One of the hits I got on the 6th page was a lurid page devoted to
incestuous sex (mostly mother-son and sister-sister). Not sure what your
name had to do with that. Other than that, very few on the first few
pages had to do with either B5 or changeling. Many were comic book
discussions, a couple were on writing in general, one was a commonent
about Crusade being one of the worst SF shows of all time, one was about
Jeremiah, ....
I think it's just that you have been involved in so many things that the
Changeling entries are there in both cases, but all that other stuff
dilutes the Changeling entries. They sure deleted the B5 entries in my
search.

The very best TV-SF-Series ever:
Babylon5, Firefly, Stargate, Star Trek
Pure alphabetically order ;-)
Are they actually not there, or just coming up so far down the list
you're not getting to them?
Remember too, if your search settings are to only return "X" number of
results, it won't show up if it's ranked "X+1".
In any case, as we've seen from other replies, it IS coming up for some
people, and quite high up the list. Just speculating, Google may be
adjusting different people's results based on their own preferences and
previous searches as well. I don't know to what extent Google tracks
user searches, particularly if the users have Google accounts - it may
be if they search "Changeling" on a regular basis, it will rank higher
on subsequent searches under that same account, too. Something like
that would explain the variety of different results people are seeing.
Speculating some more, maybe if you have Google Desktop Search, it's
also adjusting results and rankings based on what else it finds on your
computer...
The key (it's no big secret) is that search engines assume that, if
someone is searching for "J. Michael Straczynski", they want to learn
about J. Michael Straczynski, not something else. Things that
reference B5, the comics, and so on, are often about you, and a lot of
them cross-reference each other. Things about "Changeling" generally
mention you only in passing, and relatively few other web pages that
reference you have links to them, which makes any modern search engine
assume (with considerable truth) that people who are interested in you
aren't much impressed with those pages, and that someone searching for
you won't be much impressed by them either.
You want to see more "Changeling" pages turn up on searches for you?
Encourage more of them to have interesting content about you. How do
you do that? Heck, I've already told you what to do on this very
thread. Get yourself on Leno and Letterman. Good for "Changeling",
good for you, good for the WGA. The film's got major industry buzz,
and the other major players aren't available, so get out there and
carpe that old diem (or rather noctem in this case) to tell the people
that you're the Somebody who Wrote That. While you're at it, do
interviews with bridge media -- old media with major Internet
presence, like the NY Times, and (when it's time) the BBC.
I /know/ you can do it, because I've /seen/ you do it. No matter how
uninteresting you may think you are, the fact is that you're as much
fun to watch in personal appearances as the late Isaac Asimov was.
(And your agent can damn well quote me on that.)
It always seems to come down to math....
jms
I think JMS is undervaluing himself in this regard, as well. Being an old
hand at cons, he's more equipped than many Hollywood writers to take
unexpected questions and instantly provide entertaining and informative
answers to them. No risk of dead air when interviewing JMS, that's for sure.
Along these lines...there will be a Q&A after the Sunday screening of
Changeling at NYFF, and I'll be there to answer questions, as well as
attending the premiere the night before.
jms
Funnily enough, google's blog search hasn't ever been spot on -- they
have to deal with so much blog spam from blogger that they haven't
really cracked the nut yet.
Not sure if your agent or pr people track some of the other blogger
tools such as
http://technorati.com/search/Straczynski (you can see the spike on
the 'last 30 days chart' that hit the day the trailer was released)
http://www.blogpulse.com/search?queryStraczynski
They have a bunch more current stuff than google's search.
I recommend the 'CustomizeGoogle' addon for Firefox @
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/743 which will insert
links into your google results page that take you to the query on a
bunch of other sites.
My own blogging is way down the last year or so -- and that effects
how quickly it gets picked up -- I had a link in my feed yesterday to
the trailer where I mention your name and it hasn't appeared anywhere
yet. I don't do the 'ping back' stuff anymore either.
I know there are players in the old 'clipping service' space that have
been trying to grok the blogosphere -- I can try and pull some names
if you want.

gives less priority to words that aren't linked. Since you don't have
an 'official' website, a lot of bloggers won't bother linking up your
name when they talk about you so your name doesn't get indexed as
often or as quickly as other words with in the items.
Solution? Get yourself a site :-P
Which, I think is finally going to go away too -- why on earth does
every single person on earth need their own domain anyway?

I had been planning on coming up for the festival this weekend, but instead
I'm having carpal tunnel release surgery. :-p Enjoy the city that never
sleeps, and I hope the festival is fun, rewarding, and everything you want it
to be.
Google absolutely records everything you do -- what searches you make, which
links you click on, what web site you were visiting before you went to them,
and any other information they can get about you. If you have a gmail account
they scan the text of your emails to find out more about your interests. If
you're crazy enough to install their desktop software on your computer, it
reads everything on your disk and tells Google about it.
Remember, Google doesn't make a penny from their search service. Their
entire income comes from selling you to advertisers (using what they know
about you to send you ads you're likely to pay attention to).
IMHO the world would be a better place if early on we'd settled on the model
in which people had to pay for web services. I'd happily pay Google for my
web searches if in return they didn't keep any information about me.
ObB5: No doubt the people who developed those computer simulations of
Sheridan, Delenn, Franklin, and Garibaldi are descendents of Google, and
used their web search histories to figure out their personalities.

I think this is the closest anyone has come to the
correct explanation.

The allegations about the desktop software are a little over the top,

Another factor that Google uses, that would seem to be at work here, is
the number of pages (and the "better" the page the higher the score)
that link to the page in question.
So, if there is a B5 page with your name on it, linked to by a hundred
other good quality pages (not "link spam" pages), and a Changeling page
with your name on it, with just a couple links, the B5 page will be
ranked higher.
Searching for "straczynski changeling" nets almost 25k pages. Searching
for "straczynski "babylon 5"" nets 237k, almost 10 times as much.
Searching for "straczynski" alone nets several entries on the first page
that I'd call agnostic - your Wikipedia entry and your IMDB entry are two...

I suppose it would have made sense in the first place to just check with
Google, how Google ranks searches:

Of course, I think this is probably closer to the truth:

The Today Show confirmed with their lead at 7:00 am Central time they
will be interviewing Angelina Jolie in their studio about Changeling.
Lovely. This morning I slept until something like 8:42, rolled over,
fired up the box, went to CBS like usual, flitted through the
channels, rolled outta bed, went and started coffee, and paid no
attention to anything on the tube. To quote Silverstein, I got stoned
and I missed it... Aah. Big deal. I've caught the trailer a dozen
times, chortle gleefully every time to think that the dude I met 21
years ago at a con in Memphis has hit the Big Time at last, and
remember that the same piece will be on cbs.com in a day or so. I'll
have to sweettalk passes outta one of my media pals in order to see
this in a theater, though. No job, no money. No car.
Life is sweet.

I try never to get involved in my own life. Too much trouble.
It's not fair! JMS gets better looking with every interview. I, on the
other hand, am disolving into a troll. :-) Bravo, JMS!
I think the difference is that we're finally seeing photos and video taken by
professionals. To me, they finally look like the guy I see at cons.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I watched the video -- that he looks pretty
much like he looks. A strange and marvelous thing! :-)
