I have heard that in Big cities like LA and NYC that to make money
street people and street sellers will take a palmcorder into the theater
and record a movie, then sell them on the street. There was also a
Sienfeld episode about this. If the Special Edition isn't gonna come out
on video then this may be the only way to own a copy. does anyone know
of these kind of videos and where we the Hard Core Star Wars fan may
obtain some???

I am getting tired of the ridiculous speculation that these will not be
released on video. It is so obvious that they will for three reasons:

(A) When the THX Trilogy was sold, it was billed as you last chance to
"Own the Original" Star Wars...leaving them open to sell the Special
Edition.

(B) I can not think of one majorly successful film that has been
precluded from a video release...why would SWSE be an exception.

(C) Fox and Lucas have never failed to make money where they can
thorugh the Star Wars product(which is fine by me)...it is is ludicrous
that they woudl pass up an opportunity like this.

Those of you sayong "But reports say it won't be available on
video"...think about it! With SWSE release tomorrow...do they want to
let everyone wait and get it on video...or to keep the seats in the
theatres full...think about it.

No more posts saying it will not be available..they are groundless
speculations based on intentional misinformation from Fox and insane
predictions. Get real.

Lucasfilm will do anything to make a buck from the Star Wars franchise. I
stopped collecting the toys because there is just to damn much stuff to
keep up, plus most of the items are outragously expensive. The SE will
probably be out on video during xmass time. Wouldn't that make a great
gift!

Save your money, brother. I've seen these "masterpieces" and for ten bucks
what you get a camcorder translation, complete with bobbing heads, hands
reaching above the screen and a loud audiences making it impossible to hear
anything given that a camcorder's microphone is so weak. Heck, you can hear
the big guy stuffing popcorn in his mouth next to you better than the movie!
Finally, the picture isn't even horrible, it's...aww forget it, words can't
describe it. Lucas isn't dumb. If last night's audience was any indication,
the SE Trilogy will be out on video (or maybe only LD) by the end of the year,
or even early 1998.

Yeah, but if ya gotta have it then that may be the only way. :)
Besides... I've seen some pretty decent boots. Mainly concerts,
but some movies too.

Just a remembrance...

It took 3 YEARS for them to release each Star Wars film on video. They
released the movie back in 1977 then again in 1978, then twice in 1979.
The videos followed in 1980 around the release of Empire. At first, when
they
originally came out, they were selling at $80.00 ( that's right! ) Then
about
two months later, they came out in rental places. Then another 3 months
later, they finally came out on home video for the standard $17.95 ( at
that
time, it was standard. ) Considering the media blitz that the Star Wars
trilogy
has been re-mastered on THX, I think that the Star Wars Special Edition
will
take a while to release. Perhaps, about 2 years from now. Meanwhile,
they'll
still sell distributors the copies of the Star Wars trilogy from now til
they release
the Special Edition videos. One last note, a friend of mine did pick up
the bootleg
copies of the original Star Wars trilogy and let me tell you that compared
to the home video version ( non- THX, non- digitally remastered ), the
home video version looked like the THX version. I remember that the
quality was about as bad as the clips in From Star Wars to Jedi: The
Making of a Saga ( washed out colors, unfocused, etc. )

Wrongo, little Bongo. The first video release of Star Wars was in 1982,
FIVE years after the theatrical release. In fact, I remember watching it
at a friend's birthday party, and then later seeing it in the theatre when
it was rereleased before Return of the Jedi came out.

Also, it was first on television in 1985.

I think it took a LOT longer than that for it to appear at the lower
price. I also know that it was available for rental as soon as it was
released, not two months later.

Nope again. The current version of the Star Wars Trilogy are no longer
being distributed.

That's correct. I remember there was a lot of hoopla for it, and "Good
Morning America" even mentioned it. They even showed the box it came in
-- Fox was too cheap to include the actual video! If memory serves, this
baby cost around $130, in the good ol' days when home video was a luxury.
EMPIRE came out on video in 1984 (I paid $84 for it, and on Beta, no less!
<g>). I believe JEDI then came out a year after that.

1983, actually. CBS bought the rights back a year before the first video
release and paid a princely sum. It didn't exactly pay off ratings-wise
-- it was beat out by the miniseries, "Lace." There bookends to the
showing -- showing highlights and the phenomenon around the trilogy,
comments by fans, stars, celebrities, etc. Mark Hamill hosted it.

<< they finally came out on home video for the standard $17.95>>

From what I remember, the sell through price back then was around $29.95.

Not to nitpick....

Also, is anyone else out there like me - I have 4 different versions of
the film. The original CBS/FOX videos (pan and scan); the non-thx
letterboxed set (with "From Star Wars to Jedi" included); the definitive
collection on laserdisc; and the new THX Letterboxed tapes.

Just curious....

I've got those plus pan and scan on Beta and LaserDisc.

I expect to add the Special Editions on both LaserDisc and DVD once they come
out.

I'm wondering if the Definitive Collection will be the higest quality video
release of the originals for the rest of history. Will we see the originals on
DVD and future formats?
