Yes, this is the anti-Shrek. The sequel is even better.
Better animation.
Better story.
Better use of the supporting cast.
Better villain.

P.S. Altho it was kinda dark in places and I couldn't tell if that was
because it was a 2d film being aired with a 3d projector, or if it was
supposed to be that dark physically to thematically match the mood of the
scene.

I saw it normally projected, in a theater that cannot show faux-3D. I
liked it a lot; it is definitely worth seeing.
It did not seem too dark to me, that could be a matter of taste.
Perhaps I have become over-sensitized to this recently, but a lot of
the apparently-2D animation in the end titles was out of focus. Of
course, it might not actually be 2D; it may be an emulation of 2D done
in 3D (animation); indeed, the way it appeared to flip in and out
would suggest that this is the case. Perhaps the focal plain was to
narrowly defined. None of the explicitly-3D animation was
(inappropriatley) out of focus.
Or maybe it was to help the faux-3D, that is, perhaps those fuzzy
elements that might reasonably be considered "in front" are faux-3D
effects. That might also explain those fuzzy elements that are clearly
behind the clear bits, but I am even less certain of that.
I don't know whether it is possible to do (or redo) classic 2D
animation as faux-3D; if it were, I would expect Disney to be
announcing a re-re-re-release of /Snow White/ in faux-3D by now, and
that doesn't seem to be happening.
These ancillary effects (darkness from not switching the lenses,
inappropriate out-of-focus elements and [in /Fast Five/] really bad
composition), some of which may not be related to faux-3D at all, are
making the "business" of watching movies in theaters increasingly
murky and ill-defined.

"cartoon" scenes showing our hero's flashback, right out of a "KIll
Bill" film.. and ya just gotta love the panda's stepfather, the
goose! Kind of reminds me of Mr.Wizard the Lizard from the old TTV
"Tooter the Turtle" cartoons in his absentminded kindness..
