Bob Tucker turns 90 this November and we are having a birthday party
for him on Saturday, November 27 in Bloomington, IL.

Right now we are getting a rough head count, before firming up the
details. So far 25 people have indicated that they plan to attend.

More info at http://www.midamericon.org/dawnpatrol/tucker90.htm as we
have it.

Wish I'd know earlier. Bloomington Il is actually doable for us.
Except we're doing "Meat YOur Best Friend at the Zoo", a pet awareness
day.

Ask Tucker if he remembers sitting up late talking with Rusty Havelin,
Dan and Kathy at more than one Chambanacon. Sometimes I think we did
more listening than any real talking with those two around.I've known
Rusty at con settings for many years.

Perhaps Katgall is a member of PETA. "People Eating Tasty Animals,"
that is. Why shouldn't zoos hold barbecues to keep their populations
down? After all, Audubon's books didn't just describe what various
birds *looked* like. They also described what they *tasted* like!
Seriously.

Back when Audubon was writing his books,
chicken actaully tasted like something.

Cartoon I saw in Punch many years ago, set in the Paris Zoo. (As you may
know, the citizens of Paris were reduced to eating the animals in the zoo
during the siege in 1871.) Someone looking at the information cards in
front of the cage: "It doesn't tell you anything about the animal, just
cooking instructions."

I read "Meat your best friend at the Zoo" to mean take your best friend to
the zoo and feed them to the carnivores.

Something vile, if the chicken I've tasted overseas is any indication.

It still does in some other parts of the world; I tend to avoid eating
chicken in Asia as a result, having found that what I like is generimeat,
not the actual taste of chicken.

I like strawberry-flavored things, but detest strawberries themselves
due to the seed.

I like frozen-and-reconstituted orange juice, but quite dislike the
taste of fresher stuff.

Seriously, some zoos do sell the carcases when they cull their stock.

What about oranges themselves?

I kind of like the seeds, and enjoy raw strawberries if they're sweet; it's
my preferred milkshake flavor, and as jam, pie, or in a smoothie it's OK,
but strawberry juice usually tastes vaguely wrong to me and most
artificially flavored strawberry flavored things really bug me.

It's even more so with raspberries; it's my favorite kind of jam, but only
if it has the seeds.

> I like frozen-and-reconstituted orange juice, but quite dislike the

I'm almost the opposite in this also; the frozen-reconstituted stuff is
certainly drinkable if I want something sour just because or to clear a bad
taste from my mouth, but I can't say I particularly enjoy it. While
genuinely fresh and sweet orange juice is one of the all-time great flavors
:)

Actually, this reminds me of something that's sort of the converse of my
experience with chicken; while chicken in Asia has a distinct and more
gamey and chicken-y flavor that I find unpleasant, the orange juice I've had
over there tends to be very sweet and flavorful (hopefully not because it's
sweetened, though that's possible for all I know or could tell.)

OK, maybe I've never *had* fresh orange juice. The Minute Maid from
frozen that I drink it pretty sweet and I don't notice sour. I had
been ASS-u-ME-ing that divers hotel buffets, with a more sour / bitter
taste, were getting fresher stuph and that I therefore did not like
fresher OJ, but maybe I'd completely reversed.

Talk about one lousy typo and add a little topic drift.

I don't think ferrets are particularly tasy because of all the musk
glands under their skin. Now dog.... is actually very good. Tastes
like beef. Didn't get the recipe. It is illegal to eat dogs in Hong
Kong. I had dinner with scoff laws.

I believe it's the case that the more sour and bitter the juice you're
drinking, the more likely it is they're ekeing out their supply by
mashing up the skin as well as the flesh. I quite like that, but if you
prefer your squeezed orange juice sweet, then you can have it as fresh
as you like, providing all that's squeezed is the inside.

Fresh orange juice is pretty highly variable stuff, so it's possible that it
was both fresher and with a more more sour/bitter taste; to my mind, that
would make it pretty bad orange juice.

Concentrates tend to be somewhat less variable, although they do vary a bit
as well; I've just never had one that really lived up to good fresh orange
juice, or even the semi-fresh boxed stuff at the supermarket.

If you can get California valencia oranges in your area reasonably
inexpensively, and can borrow a juicer, consider giving it a try.

Just an update and a reminder about the 90th birthday party for Bob
Tucker.

We decided not to contract with the hotel, but rather to let people
make their own arrangements. I walked through the Ramada Inn when I
was in Bloomington 3 weeks ago and it is much improved from two years
ago. It is close to Bob's home and reasonably close to the restaurant.
It has a pool, hot tub & free high speed internet. Also it is
reasonable (online reservations are now available at $63/night).

Roger Tener & I are both getting rooms a the Ramada for Friday &
Saturday, so I hope that some of you folks will be able to join us for
relaxed conversation and drinks one or both nights. I also expect
there will be a couple of group meals other than the party.

The party will be at Jerry's Grille. It is one of "Bloomington's 10
best restaurants," has good reviews online, and is flexable. Joan
Marie Knappenberger visited the restaurant 2 weeks ago and was
impressed.

On the day of the party, you will be able to select from Broiled
Chicken $13.99, Blackened Catfish $13.99, Batter Fried Shrimp $14.99,
or King cut Prime Rib $19.99. Roger is getting the Prime rib! The meal
will include salad, baked potato, bread & drink. We will have
individual checks with an 18% service charge & tax added in.

So the good news is the I'm not asking for any money. You will pay the
hotel & restaurant directly. Bringing some food or drink to the
gathering on Friday or Saturday would be appreciated.

More information is available at
