I assume you mean Wrede. When she isn't on it's usually because
she has a large chunk of writing to get done, with deadlines
hanging over like vultures. When the pressure eases up she'll be
back.

I finished re-reading Sorcery & Cecelia last night, so I can start The
Grand Tour tonight!
(And you know how I don't like fantasy much? I like these fine. Yet
I just read a more SF-ish fantasy -- okay, they probably think it's a
fantasy-like SF -- and I just couldn't buy into it. I was dropping
out of belief over and over.)

That's why I'm voting for Kerry.
I have much less patience with badly written fantasy than I have for badly
written sf, at least there's usually something new in even the poorest sf.
Whereas there's a lot of fantasy that seems to me to have nothing going
for it at all. However I don't read for escapism, so I'm not the target
audience for a lot of it.
Does anyone know... did she get the third Star Wars YA novelization?
That ought to be going on about this time. I sure do miss her
when she's gone.

Me, too. This feels like a really long absence. I hope she's gotten in some
vacation time along with work.

I did ask her if not being able to talk about it made it especially hard,
and she said the first one was, but it is so different from her normal
process that it isn't as difficult now.

I'm told that she is going to be at Worldcon.

But I won't. :(

I'm glad to hear it. Thank you for the information, Dorothy.

Yes, she did. She's in the process of working on that now, along with
at least one other project.
However, she said that she's feeling kind of burnt out on rasfc right
now, so I don't know how much she'll be around, even when the crunch
lets up. But that might change, of course.
Uh, no. Lois Bujold will be, but not Pat Wrede. Trust me on this.
That's consistent with the program, unfortunately. Apparently my source
was wrong.

Not that I know of.
My wife is named Elizabeth, as it happens, but she uses her own last
name.

Oh, good. I'm glad she's just busy.

I felt that way for a while. But after a short time during which I had
minimal involvement, I felt I was missing the group. So, after
learning how to master the "split thread" and "Mark not interesting"
commands, I returned feeling able to cope with it without getting
bogged down in interminable off-topic political threads.
Of course Pat always put a lot of effort into her contribution here;
I've never had the time to be anything like so prolific. I wonder if
it's an all or nothing thing with her? I could understand someone
itching to reply to posts, yet feeling that they really can't afford
the time and therefore having to avoid reading the group altogether
because they can't bear to let things go by.

P.S. This is an experimental post done via the new (to me) laptop and
the newly downloaded Agent. I'm attempting to use it off-line, so if
anything weird happens, I do apologise.

I just had an e-mail from Pat Wrede in response to a query I posted to
the Milford list. I mentioned folks were asking after her here in my
reply to her.
Nice lady, good writer.

I wish I had the ability to split threads. I content myself with
sampling occasional messages from the long ones to see if they've
morphed into something interesting.

What does that mean? I'm trying 40tude which does sort of wrap the tree,
instead of everything piling up at the right edge of the screen.

Me too.
R.L.
Not that I know of. It's not all that uncommon a name.
It's available in Turnpike, which I use on the desktop machine. I
don't know whether Agent has it though. A quick browse through the
menus didn't reveal such a facility. On the other hand, Agent's
threading is easier to follow than Turnpike's, so it's easier to dip
in and out.

It's a feature of the Turnpike newsreader, which despite having used
Turnpike for years, I wasn't aware of until Del mentioned it one time.
It does exactly what the name suggests. If you have a long thread and
you only want to follow certain parts of it, you can split these off
into separate threads so that you can kill the parts you don't want to
read without affecting the strands that you *do* want to follow.

I received an answer today from someone claiming to be his cousin
Jill, but who writes just like him. He's being misanthropic right
now, but will be back to his usual self in a few weeks.
Lovely feature, and one I don't use that often but am occasionally
extremely glad to have available.
For other Turnpike users not aware of it - it's at the bottom of the
Article menu, as Break Thread and Rejoin Thread. It's also about halfway
down the context sensitive menu you get if you right-click on an
article.
There is also an undocumented Scoring facility that goes beyond the
simple Mark As Interesting/Uninteresting. I've never used it, but others
say it can be very helpful. One person's reference file here:
