Marilee Layman organized the entire process via e-mail, and collected
sufficient domations for Patricia C. Wrede for "her friends on the
Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.sf.composition," IIRC.
Today, I gave Pat the certificate that told her about the chair.
I'd arranged to have lunch with Pat, Lois Bujold, and Pat's sister
Carol. I needed to have a reason for it, though in truth the reason
was that Carol had the digital camera (I haven't bought mine yet), and
Lois was window dressing. I was scheduled to go walking with Pat this
morning, so I knew I needed to come up with a reason that would
satisfy Pat, to keep her from speculating in the wrong (i.e., right)
direction.
I told her that a friend whose house I'd long been interested in was
thinking of putting it on the market, and he was giving me first dibs
at it, and I wanted feedback from Pat and Lois as people who'd had
home remodeling experience, and Carol as a home decorator.
It worked beautifully. Pat spent the entire walk giving me advice
that would have been exceedingly useful if I had indeed been
considering the merits of buying a new house. It was easy for me to
carry on, because all of it was true except for the part about the
house going on the market.
So we showed up for lunch, and Carol took out the camera and started
snapping photos, and we made comments about her new toy, though I
gather it wasn't. Once we sat down, I handed her the letter from the
Friends of the Library, and her face turned several interesting
expressions, mostly comprising surprise and glee. She said "Wow"
several times and with several different expressions over the course
of lunch. It was all quite satisfactory.
And she kindly refrained from killing me when I told her that I wasn't
thinking of buying a new house after all.
The pictures will be available on the Web as soon as Carol gets them
from her camera to my computer (via Lois's computer, since Carol
doesn't have broadband).
Pat will post separately, if she hasn't already, but I'd like to thank
Marilee for organizing the whole process, and to rasfc for letting me
have the fun of springing the surprise on Pat.

As with most of Pat's advice, if it doesn't seem useful right away, at
some point in the future it will be indispensible. (-:

Y'all are welcome! I just emailed to have the C put next to Pat's
name again on the author list. It looks like nobody noticed it while
it was up!

Carol definitely knows how to use her camera! Great pictures! I
think the last time I saw Pat, she had long hair.

Temporarily not available. :-(
Dan, ad nauseam
Ditto thanks to Marilee and thanks to Beth for 'springing' the surprise! And
to her co-conspiritors for providing suitable camouflage. And, of course,
congratulations to Pat. *g*
Looking forward to the photos.

Having finally found this thread (duhh, I should have looked at the
second page of headers sooner) I have to agree. Great pictures!
