For all intents and purposes, it's a personal blog, to which you are
to send your "exciting new prose" for "consideration" although they
don't pay.

It's an ambitious project looking for ambitious writers. If you're
looking for pay, the internet is not the way to go. If you want to
write and be read, that's what we're trying to do. We don't have any
money to put forward at the moment, but as readership grows, we hope
to have some money to pay. There are advantages to publications--at
any level--far beyond pay. No, if you get published here you haven't
"made it" or anything. But you've put a foot forward, you've made a
step. And it is reviewed by a panel of MFAs, so everything that is
published is of exceptional quality. It is not a place for the short-
sighted but for the adventurous.

Newcomer's FAQ
Ooops, it looks like you broke one of our rules. I'm guessing you are
new here, and hoped this FAQ might help you find your feet faster.
1) WHAT RULE DID I BREAK?
Some people might complain that you spammed -- you didn't, technically,
but your announcement does come under our no-advertising policy. Ads
can be anything that promotes something, even if you aren't making money
off it. For more details about this (and much more), check out the
group's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) at:
http://www.lshelby.com/rasfcFAQ.html
2) WHAT DO I DO NOW?
The most important thing is to know that this isn't a webpage. People
can get to it in a lot of ways, and messages in this group take a long
time to travel to all the people in the group. Even if you apologize,
people will keep complaining about your off topic post because they
won't have seen your apology yet, and might not see it until tomorrow or
the next day. You may even see this FAQ twice, because there are two
people here who post it.
The best thing to do is ignore any complaints. Don't even read them,
they'll just make you feel cross and defensive.
Instead, go look at the other topics people are discussing, and start
responding to that. If you don't post ads, don't post samples of your
work longer than 500 words, and don't tell us that you have found the
one true way to write or publish, we are generally pretty easy to get
along with, and very helpful to new writers.
3) HOW DO I REPLY TO A MESSAGE?
The custom here is to quote the part of the message you're responding to
that is relevant to your reply. (This is because sometimes people see
your message before they see the one you are replying to.)
Most quote functions put a llne at the top that says who you are
replying to. Leave that there, and if there are some at the top of the
message you are quoting, you should probably leave them there too.
Reply after the quoted material, or interspersed with it. (Look at what
other people are doing for examples.) And snip any quoted material that
isn't needed to understand the context of your reply.
Google Groups doesn't make it obvious how to do this, but it's possible:
If you are reading us through Google Groups, when you're looking at a
message, instead of hitting "reply" at the bottom of that message, hit
"show options" at the top of it. Then hit "reply" from the list of
options that brings up, and it will give you proper quoting and even
attributions ("So-and-so wrote:").
This "Newcomer's FAQ was written by Michelle and Zeborah,
but is now being posted by others on the group as well.
Let's see. I've been coming here since sometime in 2005, I think. So
I'd have to say I've seen at least a couple dozen ambitious projects
looking for ambitious writers.
Good luck with your project, but if you want to get reasonable responses
from this newsgroup, you'd be better served to learn your way around and
kind of sneak in sideways. this method will only earn flames and
resentment.
Bye.

Ourdebate.com lifts free debate between writers and dilutes it with ads.
rec.arts.sf.composition is a USENET group, and can be accessed for free.
Ourdebate.com therefore sucks (the life from discourse),
and dribbles (deceit when integrity would have worked just as well).

Missed the whole 'pixel stained wretches' thing, didn't you? Pity. It
was a good project. Oh, well, figures. As it's obvious you never
read this newsgroup that you'd not have heard of that, either.

Almost entirely harmless. Really.

Other than Fictionwise, SF.com, Strange Horizons, Abyss and Apex,
Intergalactic, Baen's Universe - damn my favourite programme's about to
start on TV or I'd actually look up another few dozen internet sites
that pay.

Save yourself the effort. They're all listed on www.ralan.com

We've seen dozens, if not hundreds, of these in the past few years.
>If you're
> looking for pay, the internet is not the way to go.
If you're not going to pay, the real writers can post their stuff for
free by themselves; they don't need the "help" of a nonpaying E-Zine
which has no more visibility than the author does.
> If you want to
> write and be read, that's what we're trying to do.
There are plenty of free-fic sites already available. If you are
charging money for something that you're trying to get for free, then
basically you're trying to get the authors to invest in your business
with no guaranteed return. That's not the way it works. The basic rule
in publishing: Money flows FROM the publisher TO the author, NEVER the
other way around -- and "money", in this case, includes the stories.
While some publishers have gotten a clue in this area, many of them
still consider ANY E-Publication to be "first rights", and thus if you
"publish" these stories, you've still seriously devalued them,
regardless of what rights you retain or do not retain.
And, of course, you've spammed a Usenet group, which means you've
demonstrated that you couldn't even be bothered to check out what the
proper behavior for the community here IS, which doesn't give me any
confidence that you have the faintest clue how to go about publicizing
anything.

Why, he's probably out there already, sending the information to a
thousand mobile phones...
The internet magazine Strange Horizons pays 5c/word and is considered a
professional market for purposes of joining our genre's professional
organisation. There are plenty of other webzines that pay hard cash. I
should know -- they've paid me. It is also possible to use the internet
to sell electronic magazines and books, rather than display them as free
access material, and readers will pay for them if they're worth it.
Again, I know this from personal experience.
As for the plethora of zines offering those "advantages far beyond pay"
-- go to http://www.ralan.com and look at the listings under 4theluv.
And that's just the ones where the editors have written to Ralan and
asked him to list their mag. The ones that pay, he'll take a listing
from anyone who cares to submit it. The ones that don't pay, he'll only
accept listings from the editor.
I want to write and be read, and get paid money for doing so. And I do
so -- on the internet.

Ambitious writers start at the top-paying markets and work their way
down.
If you're

The highest-paying spec-fic market, Jim Baen's Universe, is electronic.

Simpler to set up my own website.

An advanced degree does not equal competence. Notice what people with
MBAs have been doing.

Look, bettersol, firstly I don't take kindly to demands to bookmark
sites, secondly if I want to keep track of something I have wit
enough to know to bookmark it without your advice, and thirdly
bookmarking something doesn't mean one will "catch every new issue";
bookmarking doesn't work like that.
I see the rest of the issues have already been dealt with.

The shortcuts are all full of people using them.

I had something called "live bookmarks" in Firefox for a while, kind of a
cross between bookmarks and a news aggregator, but they didn't agree with
me. Or the rest of Firefox didn't agree with me, I can't remember, but
anyway I went back to Konqueror when it started to be less buggy than
Firefox.
I exist in a happy state of uncaughtupness most of the time.

Ooops, play again.
We've brought in about $12000 this year so far from the internet, not
including the sales of our chapbooks or other SRM Publisher projects
or the Baen Webscriptions for our ebooks.
What you have is an exposure site, and exposure unlinked to income
opportunity for the writer is a bad plan. Money flows to the writer,
to borrow Yog's well-known phrase.
