Sea Spells
__________

He fell under sea spells:
That young man with the pale hair,
Who crouched there, read his dirtied tome each day.
He quickly flipped the pages, and moved his lips,
And if you watched, from time to time--
He'd never lift his eyes from the fluttering page,
But dug into a sack of bread
And scattered crumbs into the clutching claws of gulls.

They knew him well.
Each day, he strode to this shore
On winged feet to read, and then to gaze.
They cackled in circles around him.
He simply muttered the lines
Of his book the louder
And sometimes pushed his long hair
From his face. At times I was reminded of
October flocks that block the sun, then pass.

He nested in the shade of boulders
When the sun threatened to crown his head with heat.
And when he closed his tome, his eyes roved low
Over the water, sea skimmers besting the wind--
Until the sun transformed from blue to wine-dark red
The sea that bore white fishing boats upon its breast.

At feeding time, the seabirds rent their feathers
From their backs, their breasts, sang songs of blood.
He neared the thirty-third chapter;
Turned the last page, tossed aside the book and rose.

"Leave me now,"
I heard him scream.
He shook his fist. A curtain split across the sky, its crackly
Fabric cracked, darkened the air. Ten hundred thousand
Feathers bundled fifty hearts
And hoisted.
"There are thousands of fish in there.
The ocean fairly heaves in fullness--
Feed yourselves!"
