from the main place
where in this town I had a forum,
darkness, despair and la de da,

looked at the grounds around the shed,
the trees with vines that don't let much sun in.
They told me it was okay for a man to cry,
still feels strange.
it's obvious he slaps you around some,
I thought of you in pain.

Yes, these are for an as-yet unrecorded song... tried it out on the stage a
few times, and it goes over well. Probably obviously, there's a Plastic Ono
Band feel to it, with some crashing guitar riffs amid tin can drums and
rubberband bass runs.

Yes, I understand that place in time very well, countless times over. My
thought/suggestion? Write! Poetry, songs, scream it out a bit--- find the
poetry readings/open mics in your area, and let it out... back in 1995,
during the big "crash and burn" which led to me being a full time 24/7 poet,
the open mic/poetry readings and the people I met there, and continue to
meet, literally saved my life. I can't praise the curing effects of regular
time on stage high enough! There just ain't nothing better... no sex, no
drug, can match the high of performing.

it, right. Easy to fix that. I think I was following the music during the
typing, since this one was written onstage, freestyle, to fit the musical
notes surrounding me. A great number of my writings happen this way.

Someone alerted me to this chat group and I felt that I should post
here and set the record straight. My name is Tim Riley and I am a
friend of John Stewart's. I am the webmaster for John's online lyric
database (www.califoniabloodlines.com), run his online CD store, and I
am the moderator for his onllne discussion group, Bloodlines. When I
read the posts here I was amazed at this story because I have never
heard anything like it before. I have heard John say that he wrote
"Never Goin Back" long before he recorded in Nashville and picked the
name of the city out of thin air. Also, I have never heard him say
anything but kind words about Johnny Cash and John is very friendly
with Rosanne. So when I read the posts here I talked to John to see if
there was any truth to this story. John's response was an emphatic
"No".
First of all, he wrote "Daydream Believer" long after the Monkees were
established. John's friend, Chip Douglas replaced Don Kirshner as the
Monkees producer and offered them the song. John had previously
offered the song to Spanky and Our Gang. The Monkees took the song and
had a huge hit. John still receives songwriter's royalties from this
song.
Secondly, John recorded his landmark album "California Bloodlines" in
Nashville in 1968. Bob Dylan was recording "Nashville Skyline" in the
studio across the hall. Kris Kristofferson was sweeping floors at the
studio. The decision to record the album in Nashville was made by
John's producer, Nik Venet. When they came back to LA with the album,
they helped start the entire Country Rock genre. John was one of the
first folk/rock artists to record with Nashville musicians and the
whole LA rock scene took note of that album which was later selected
as one of Rolling Stone's top 200 albums of all time.
John never had any problem with Johnny Cash and was never threatened
or strongarmed by Johnny in any way. Johnny sang a duet with John on
"Get Rhythm" on John's "Airdream Believer" CD and John and Rosanne
remain the best of friends. Hope this sets the record straight. These
legends start and take on a life of their own. I'm sure that the
people posting here thought this story was true but according to John
it is totally false.
