vmoo...@lark.ru.ac.za (V C MOONIEYAN) whose red-brick univerity
Rhodes University East London, South Africa suspisciously lacks a
decent encyclopedia requests:
>I would like to know if anyone out there knows anything about
>modernism and from which period is cosidered the age of modernism.
Not much, roughly a century. Your choices of start dates:
1830 -- Romantic era. (cf. Johnson's "Birth of the Modern")
1880's? -- Pub. dates on Whitman's "Leaves of Grass".
1900's the usual start date w/ publication of Freud.
Modernism ended in the early 1980's when the architect Phil Johnson
(himself considered one of >the< Modernists) answered the question,
"How is a skyscraper like a Chippendale"? in mid-town Manhattan.
This inaugurated the next great artistic movement -- Post-Modernism.
Poetry considers Ashbury our initial Post-Modernist. Photography's
a little tricky, but I'd give the palm to Mapplethorpe.
Rec.arts.poems isn't real good w/ intellectual discussions. Our
arguments tend to name-calling. You may want to try asking on
rec.arts.books where a long-running thread on
Modernism/Post-Modernism's just concluded.
