"Odetta, 77, the folk and blues singer whose renditions of civil rights
anthems accompanied historic events and made history themselves, died last
night in New York. ...Obit here http://tinyurl.com/65gp9a

Here is the incredible Odetta singing Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9pHR7-_sRI

I will always be grateful to have heard Odetta perform live on several
occasions in the 1960s and 70s.
There was no one else like her .. and she inspired the world. An enormous
loss to us all.

Oh, Annie. I am so sorry to hear this. Odetta used to play the coffee
house next door to the bar I tended in Coconut Grove, and we spent many
an hour sitting round a little table before and after sets, yakking and
laughing. She was a very special lady.

How wonderful that you spent those times with her...
I never had the chance to actually meet her, but have
admired her and her brilliant work for many, many years.
There was and has been no one else quite like Odetta..
She was indeed a national treasure.

I have been very, very lucky, Annie. Being in the right place at the
right time sort of thing. I've got a storehouse of great memories.
