I started to watch the series "Homeland" dubbed into German
on German TV (I live in Switzerland) and there were scenes
where those Arabs were forcing Damian Lewis to beat his
co-soldier to death, and I said to my husband, "you know,
I really dislike fundamental Islamists but I don't need to
watch a series that makes me loathe them even more". And he
agreed and we deleted it from our DVR.

Yesterday Swiss news told us that traces of pork were found
in döners. I admit it, I laughed.

I anticipated great things from "Homeland". Damian Lewis is one of my
favourite actors. After his tours de force appearances in The Forsyte
Saga and Band of Brothers I believed that he would never need to
debase his "currency", so to speak.

How wrong I was. Despite all the hype, Homeland is little more than a
sickening, incredible violence-porn-fest. I couldn't bear to watch
the complete first season, being convinced after four or five episodes
that it was never going to improve. I have never regretted the
decision to give it a wide berth.

Dear Friend,

Even the most contemplative of Westerners, people who read Islamic texts
and are aware of the philosophic side of Islam, cannot help but decry
the conflict between what Islam says and what Islam does. The
philosophic claim to be a religion of peace is belied by the internecine
strife as Sunnis and Shia war with each other and upon the truly
peaceful Sufis, who have not retaliated. Perhaps true Islam can be
claimed only by the Sufis then, but the majority Sunnis consider them
heretics.

Then, too, the Sunnis have for all practical purposes closed the door on
ijtihad for more than 1,000 years, putting an end to the previous
intellectual achievements of Sunni Islam and forestalling any attempt to
adapt Islam to the rest of the world. Shia Islam recognizes a place for
mujtahids and at least the slow advancement of thought. But they are a
minority and persecuted by Sunnis as heretics.

Then there is the enormous problem of the insistence of Islam that
religion and government be one. This view has been definitively
rejected in the West (but for a fanatic minority in America). But when
we look at the Islamic world, we see Turkey slipping back into the folds
of religion, we see Indonesia doing the same, and Egypt in the hands of
an Islamic party determined to merge the two into one. Iran and Saudi
Arabia provide frightening examples of the consequences of such
ideology. Islam and democracy cannot truly coexist, as Islam uses
democracy only to take power and then democracy ends. The Turkish
experiment succeeded only so long as secularists achieved power.

Then there are the social problems with Islam. First and foremost is
the denigration of the role of women. This the West cannot abide.
Under the guise of male protection of women, the Islamic patriarchal
society makes prisoners of its women, confining them to their homes
unless accompanied by their men, treating them as inferiors for the
purpose of education. And Islamic attitudes toward rape are disgusting.

Intolerance of competing religions is rampant in Islamic countries.
Imprisonment of Christians who engage in no more than what you have done
here is not uncommon. Simply bringing a Bible into some Islamic
countries is a felony. All of this can only bespeak a truly deep
insecurity in Islamic society as to the truth of what it preaches.

Free speech, freedom of religion, freedom to dissent - these are not
positive values in Islam. To most in the West who have given it
thought, Islam is where the West was during the Wars of the Reformation.
Islam has 500 years of intellectual development to catch up on, and it
is showing no interest in doing so.

Me too - you did better than I, Mique, I didn't even manage four or five
episodes - I bailed out before the end of episode one. Shame, because I like
Damian Lewis a lot. He was wonderful as Soames Forsyte.

I agree with you completely. I also find it sad that the French had to
go practically alone to Mali to fight the Islamists, that practically
no-one is trying to set things right in Nigeria, and that Iran is
blatantly building an atom bomb while the rest of the world looks on.

Try or not, its just that the country is religiously cut in half at
the city of Jos. And almost always has been. There is no solution to
that.

Just as Russia, China, India and Pakistan have made atom bombs. But
they haven't always gotten a lot of US adverse attention. Anyway, US
experts claim that the industrial environments in those countries
would not help their atomic weapons go off properly. So, essentially,
they've been making atomic bombs that are actually duds that won't go
off, because they haven't been atomically constructed correctly.
