Mrs Pollifax TV movie

My TV Guide gives it a B+, for what it's worth. I love this book, and all of
Dorothy Gilman's books, so I have my fingers crossed for it to be good.

It started off being like one of the books, and then went terribly
astray. I'd give it more like a B-. A little diverting, almost worth the
effort of taping and viewing.

I will probably keep it around, but I was disappointed. It did start off
with the same beginning as the book, but even then I thought it was
too heavyhanded. I wish someone British had produced it.

It was producced in Britain--Ireland to be exact, and I thought it was a pretty
fair show--even though it may not have followed the books. Of course, I'm
prejudiced--my brother, Paul Birchard, had a prominent role as the assistant to the
CIA chief.

I quite enjoyed what I saw of the Mrs. Pollifax telefilm; it may have
borrowed from multiple books and rearranged geography and characters (on one
hand, I wish they hadn't done that to Robin Burke-Wright; OTOH, I wasn't
much impressed with that choice of actors), but its heart was in the right
place.
My frustration was with my local CBS affiliate, which first delayed the
movie till the following Sunday afternoon (having by blind luck acquired the
rights to a local NBA playoff broadcast), then played an infomercial over
the first 20 minutes of the delayed airing! [That weekend's golf coverage
ran way overtime, and it was apparently more important to air the full
network golf coverage and the infomercial than it was to air the complete
movie.)
