If anyone will know of new artists for me to consider, RAMmers will. I like
realistic paintings or photographed/tinted photos. Mostly, I'm pretty
ignorant of who else I might like that is clean, simple, bold, realistic.
I'm especially fond of textures and still regret not buying some handmade
torn paper art I saw about 12 years ago.
So, anyone know of a local artist who's affordable? Someone who has a
webpage? Or, an artist I might not have considerred/remembered from art
appreciation class 20 years ago? The galleries I've been to in Cincinnati
are either a) snobby or b) out of my price range or c) well.... outside of
my house. I'm not buying this to invest in it, and my budget is relatively
small ($150-$250). I'm just looking for someone new to me that I like. I
don't care about the name or the size or the color. I'm not looking to match
my couch. Clean, simple, bold, striking, realistic....
Note to Mark Alan Miller: Yes, I do tend to like Mappelthorpe, and I live
in Cincinnati. Why do you ask? ;-)

Whoa, I do thank you for that statement---matching the couch. Lordy mama, I
hate that.
Years ago, at "the Impressionists" exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of
Art, I was just a breath away (damn, Jane "saved me") from flinging myself
in front of Monet's "Water Lilies", or whatever it was, shouting, "Harry,
this matches the couch, and it's just the right size!"

I wish he had a web page, and I don't even know if he's still alive,
but one of my prized possessions is a drawing by Ronald Scarborough.
One of drew of my daughter. I also have this one on the wall that he
drew as well.
The one of my daughter was ruined during my move to Florida. One day
I'd like to get it redone. I'll take quick pictures and stick it on
my website for you to view.
He's from the Detroit area.
Here are a couple quick bad shots of them:
http://www.geocities.com/bridgethock/forbeth.html
I've tried googling him to purchase more work, but cannot find a web
presence at all.
Best of luck,
B.
The starting bid is only four thousand!
(I love David Hockney, but wouldn't say this is one of his best)

If you look through this man's site, I guarantee there will be
something you love:
An interesting place to shop for art is eBay. There are
local artists from all over who are "self-representing"
selling their work there. They have a discussion board
where they talk and encourage each other. It's at
<http://forums.ebay.com/db2/forum.jsp?forum=35>. You can
certainly find things within your budget, and the variety
is exceptional.

that's awesome Bridget -- thanks for putting the page up. Very nice.
Beth
yes, but please no puppies, kitties or baby animals... or babies. I love Ann
Geddes' photographs but I wouldn't want one on my wall all the time.
Beth
those are stunning, Carlos, thank you! You can see thumbnails without
signing in, so I was able to cruise through enough photos to know that
they're gorgeous. And, if you get them unframed and unmatted, they're
affordable. I'll be looking at those more!
Beth
those are interesting -- some of them are even eerie! Black and white is
too subtle for what I'm searching for...
Beth
Sunflower and Palm Leaf is AMAZING. Thanks for this site.
Beth
very cool -- I'll look around there, too.

yeah, I would prefer to do this in person, it's just that agoraphobics like
me don't shop well in person. I'd have a panic attack before getting past
all the duck cutouts and jewelry and pottery...
Beth
never even thought about that Joanne, thanks!

Look at Ron Burns, or George Rodrique... wonderful critter pictures.

That's just for the framing, of course...?
(kudos on not having to match the couch!)

those are cool -- but not a single one of a beagle in reindeer antlers! :-(

sadly, no. It's probably going to be a small piece, or an unknown artist
with a standard "buy it yourself" frame for awhile. I know I can get
O'Keeffe's Morning Glories, with a generic frame at AllPosters.com in my
price range -- that's my emergency backup plan if I can't find an affordable
local artist through RAM or other sources.

What does this mean? I can't think that fast!
B.
I thought you'd feel that way...but some of his work is so intense....
Take for example:

What is your impression of this?

Linda?! You must have something that Beth would love to buy from you!
Here's a sample of Linda's work:
striking, evocative... but not for me.
so I guess I'm looking for a still life, based on more stuff I've looked at
now.
I'm loving this artist:

click on Still life, then Sunflower and Palm leaf. That's stunning.
Beth
That is beautiful and I can personally vouch for Sam.
If any of you ever read my (now oh so old) poetry site, Sam was kind
enough to allow many of his pictures to be used.
He's a sweetheart of a guy.
Best wishes to you,
B.
yes, I was hoping Linda would pipe in with URLs to her work, or those of
friends who have work in the style I'm seeking.
Hmmmmmmm, maybe I need to find an artist who needs a web presence and do
some bartering.... I could be going at this backward....
Beth
We have several Talbots in our house--photographs of wild animals. I like
them.

David Hockney? Ansel Adams?
If you want original art, you'll have a hard time finding anything in your
price range. I think that the web barter system is a great idea. And, if you
deal directly with the artist, they will get ALL the money.

Hi Beth,
I'm a big fan of Georgia O"Keeffe's art. I have four of her prints
hanging on the walls throughout my house.
Thought you might want to check out the following artists:

Sorry,
David Hockney was my idea-- Just a joke since we're related.

You might look at posters or reproductions of prints by Charles Rennie
Mackintosh. No way you could afford an original, unless you get a web
design project for the Rolling Stones, but I like his things very much.
Googling his name brings up a whole bunch of websites. The one which seemed
to be most likely to have samples of his work was offline when I tried to
bring it up.

Ditto.. CRM's designs are wonderful.. buildings, furniture, jewelry...lovely
stuff. Did you have chance to go to the Willow tearooms in Glasgow that he
designed? What a treat..
Annie
Yeah, we had afternoon tea there. It was great. I think the exhibit was in
one of the buildings that Macintosh designed. They had a smaller version do
a touring show that I saw in NYC. It wasn't as good as the original, but
still very interesting.
Mary
OK, now, cut it out! You guys are making me drool and turn green with envy!

Yes, I saw that after I posted!
Thalia
www.allposters.com had a lot of posters for $15-20. They were definitely to
my taste, but not what I'm looking for at this time. I would love to have
some of them up in my dining room. Right now I'm looking for something to
hang across from the chair I work in. I e-mailed Sam Laundon about his work,
to see what his prices are. I really want 2 of his works and might have to
adjust my budget to cover a Christmas present to myself, too. I hope I hear
back from him -- I love his stuff! I love PhotoDude's stuff too, and will
e-mail him if I don't hear back from Sam Laundon.
Beth
Beth,
I'll email you Dude's response...
