Macaulay Culkin????! What about that girl from "My Girl", or the kid from "sleepless in seattle", and the kid from "time Bandits" was spinky too. (you may have guessed by now that I'm no good at names:o) ). Anything but Mac! He is almost as bad as Wil Weaton (and now I think of it, River Phenix was good as a kid, well in stand by me he was!)

In Australia and the U.S., the two countries I come from, "kid" is
a unisex term. Is this not so in the U.K.? If it is, my favorite
"kid actors" (meaning preteen) would have to be

1) Anna Paquin (_The Piano_--even if we never see her again)
2) Kirsten Dunst (_Interview_, _Little Women_)
3) Anna forgotten-her-last-name-but-she's-great-anyway (_My Girl_)

I'm also puzzled by the inclusion of Henry Thomas for E.T. as the
only pre-1990s movie in your list. Henry Thomas is now an adult
playing adult roles (e.g. _Legends of the Fall_). If you're going
to go back to *earlier* child actors, there are too many good ones
to count!

Hmmm....This is going to be tough (there just aren't many good child
actors out there!)

1. Christian Bale
2. Kirsten Dunst
3. Joseph Mazzello (He *was* the one in Shadowlands, right?)
4. Christina Ricci
5. Max Pomeranc (Searching for Bobby Fischer)

--Yes...other than Henry Thomas and the Renfro kid in the Client, they
are all mediocre. I would include Natalie Portman in The Professional as
one...Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun as two...and to replace that
wretch Macauley "My Dad's an Asshole" Culkin, Kirsten Dunst.

How about
1. Anton Glanzelius (My Life As A Dog)
2. Pelle Hvenegaard (Pelle the Conqueror)
3. Doug McKeon (On Golden Pond)
4. Ricky Schroder (The Earthling, The Champ)
5. Griffin O' Neal (The Escape Artist)

Other contenders would have to include Christian Bale (Empire of the Sun),
Lukas Haas (Witness), Kirsten Dunst (Interview with The Vampire) and
Gaspard Manesse and Raphael Fejto from Au Revoir Les Enfants.

Julie Harris? She was in her mid-20s when she played a 12-year-old girl
in the play (and eventually film) `Member of the Wedding.' She gave a
great performance, but her `12-year-old' was about as convincing as Mary
Martin's `boyish' Peter Pan. (`Member of the Wedding' marked the debut
of someone you might have considered for your list: Brandon de Wilde.)

Mickey Rooney is a medical anomaly, being one of the few humans on record
to be born adolescent.

Did Natalie Wood ever appear on screen as a child?

I would add to this list -- as I did to another thread on the same
subject -- the name of Georges Poujouly (best known from `Forbidden Games.')
He was a powerful presence on the screen.

I don't know about five, but my all time favorite actor is Lukas
Haas. The only bad film that I know he made was "Solarbabies."
Everything else has basically been top rate. However, I may be
biased because we went to the same elementary school. Only
problem is I never knew him personally.
