I think this would be a good idea for the net. People are always posting
with their opinions of the latest movies, and I often wonder how a particular
movie is stacking up with readers of this group.
Here is what I'm proposing: You go see a movie. Next chance you get,
send a piece of mail to a movie rating server with your ranking. Every so
often, the movie ratings are posted to the net. The ratings you send aren't
a review, just a single number on some scale.
Any thoughts on this? I'll write the vote compiler and manage the
results. Is this worth the effort? Would people participate?

I ran something similar to what you are proposing a while back on
the net. I eventually had to give it up when the time requirements
of my job increased to the point that I no longer had time for
such extra-curricular activities.
I don't think there should be any problem with participation, since
I was getting nearly 100 votes per week at one point, and the
net has grown considerably since then. There certainly seemed to
be interest for such a thing, and I would guess that there is
still interest now.
As to whether or not its worth the effort, that's really a question
for you to answer. I'm not sure what kind of "vote compiler" you intend;
the more strictures you impose on the vote format, the fewer votes
you will receive and the fewer correct votes you will receive, but
fewer strictures also means more work for you. Misspellings and
people misusing the ratings scale were sometimes real problems.
Correcting them will take time.
The two questions that I really have are: what rating scale will
you use, and what movies will you rate? I didn't really care much
for the CR scale- I prefer the Leeper scale, but it's all a matter of
opinion. The same is true of the second question- will you rate
only first run, wide release movies? Or any movie anyone cares to
rate? Is there a time limit on how long movies will remain on the
list? When a movie comes out on video and I'm thinking of renting
it, will there be some way I can find out how people rated it when
it was playing in the theatres? Again, how you answer such questions
will probably determine how much effort you will need to expend.
Anyway, good luck with the idea- I really enjoyed it when I had
the time, and I think a lot of netters would find such a thing
useful.

Last Friday's paper stated that STV went back for a complete recut following
preview screenings -- a VERY bad sign this close to the scheduled release
date! Prepare for a major, major bomb on this one, folks . . .

The goal of this project is to make it easy on you and me. For me, that
means minimal human intervention in compiling votes. For you, that means
an easy way to register votes.
I have settled on a simple rating scale of 1 to 10, 10 being good and one
being bad. I don't want to get into any flame wars about movie scales. If
you have your own scale, and can convert it to a number, you can then convert
your number to this scale, and send it to me. If you REALLY don't like this
scale, I guess you can choose to not participate, but that would be a shame.
I will accept votes for any movie ever made in the history of mankind.
Movies will stay on the list indefinitely. If multiple versions of a movie
exist, please suffix your movie title with the year in parentheses, like
"Phantom of the Opera (1923)" or whatever.
Once a week or so, I'll post the current movie listings. For each
movie, I'll list the number of votes, the average rating, and a histogram
of where the votes fell. In addition, movies which are making their first
appearance on the list will be marked with a *. For example:
118 7.3 ...0113310 * Annie Hall
This means that Annie Hall had 118 votes, with an average score of 7.3.
The votes were distributed across the range with no votes of 1, 2, 3, 1-9
percent voting 4, 10-19 percent voting 5 and 6, 30-39 percent voting 7 and 8,
10-19 percent 9, and 1-9 percent voting a 10. Mathematical types will note
that each character in the histogram is the voting percentage div 10, with
a "." representing "no votes".
How do you vote? Easy. Send mail to either
or
...!uunet!trantor.harris-atd.com!movies
In your mail, each vote must be on a single line. You can have many votes
in a single mail message. Each vote should look like:
vote <rating> <title>
<Rating> should be an integer between 1 and 10. <Title> is everything after
the integer. Ratings > 10 or < 1 are simply clipped to 10 and 1, respectively.
Lines which do not begin with the word "vote" are simply ignored. Remember,
humans will not be reading you votes. These gosh-danged computers will be
tallying the scores.
Please pay attention to spelling in the titles to avoid confusion and
heartache for the list manager! Please pay attention to spelling in the

All votes will be retained for accounting purposes along with the sender's
site name and mailing account. Miscreants attempting to stuff the ballot box
will have their site/account names placed on a kill list, and all future votes
from that site/account will be rejected.
If everyone participates, this could be a useful and on-going survey.
With all the summer releases coming up, I'm interested to see how the movies
will be rated. So get involved now! Think of any movies you've ever seen
and start sending votes!
