My node has only just started receiving the newgroup, so I missed the
oppurtunity to contribute.
The only book I can recommend is "Groucho" by Hector Arce. It traces the Marx
brothers from their grandparents right up to Groucho's death. An excellent
book for Marxophiles.

Although the _Portable Curmudgeon_ contains a section on Groucho, it's not
exclusively by or about him. Mostly, it's a collection of "quotes"
attributed to and anecdotes written about various people of alleged surly
reputation.
It's amusing enough at times, but unfortunately much of the material is
either misquoted or outright apocryphal and, annoyingly, it contains no
sources for any of the material (in this, it's very reminiscent of that
book that came out a year or so ago called something like _The End of
Everybody_ which, while probably mostly accurate, contained a fair number
of pop legends about how various historical figures died).
Furthermore, some of the choices for entries are quite strange. For
example, the book quotes Joyce from _Ulysses_: "History is a nightmare from
which I am trying to awake" (misquoted, as I recall). A real kneeslapper,
that one.

I have a copy of "The Portable Curmudgeon" which was edited and
compiled by Jon Winokur, but it is NOT all about Grouch Marx.
He is just one of the people quoted in it.
The blurb on the front reads:
"More than 1000 outrageously irreverent quotations, anecdotes,
and interviews on a vast array of subjects, from an illustrious
list of world-class grouches."
Groucho is on cover (along with two others) but he is not the subject.
