I see that Avatar is playing in the Hollywood Cinerama Dome in 3-D. This is
obviously Digital projection. Is this the first time that 3-D has been
shown at the Dome? Are they using the regular screen, or has a special
screen been installed for this presentation? Thanks.

Looks like they installed a new NEC NC2500S 2K digital projector at
the Dome in time for Avatar.
As for the screen, Arclight Hollywood uses Dolby 3D, one of the
advantages of which is no special polarised screen is necessary.

Where did the info that the Cinerama Dome was using Dolby 3D come from?
It's not in the URL that Bob England posted. XpanD issued their own press
release on Dec. 16th which makes it quite explicit that it's an XpanD system
using LCD shutter glasses.

Dolby 3D would work at the Cinerama Dome, but the XpanD system doesn't have
the slight color balance difference between each eye that Dolby 3D does.

The map on Dolby's website (http://www.dolby.com/consumer/product/
movies/theater/find-a-cinema.html) has listed Pacific's Arclight
Hollywood, where the Dome is located, as a Dolby 3D location for quite
some time.
While I've been to the Arclight Hollywood numerous times, I've never
seen a 3D film there, so it was wrong of me to assume that this
applied to the Dome itself.
Interestingly, Arclight Hollywood's Avatar showtimes (https://
www.arclightcinemas.com/ArcLight/faces/MovieDetails.jsp?movieName=%283D%29+AVATAR&movieType=NowShowing&pageInfo=Now-Playing&currentCinemaId=1001)
indicate that Avatar is showing in 3D in another auditorium besides
the Dome. Perhaps they are using Dolby 3D there. I'm planning to see
Avatar there, so I'll find out for sure.

That link for Arclight Hollywood Avatar showtimes is still broken,
however I have confirmed that this one works:

http://tinyurl.com/y8wfx2o

It takes you to Now Playing at ArcLight Hollywood where Avatar (3D) is
the first film listed.

Thanks so much for the information. I am a film-imax fan, but will
definitely see Avatar at the Dome as well as the Bridge Imax. This is fun!!

OK, I can see how you would think that. Using Dolby 3D would be a perfectly
viable system for the Dome. I'm actually suprised they went with the more
expensive and difficult to maintain shutter glass system, but maybe they're
being subsidized by XpanD?

Dolby's color should be fine if the system was set up correctly. The
Infitec filters do create an apparent difference but the color balance
corrections should be part of the setup and kicks in when in 3D mode.

Someone should experiment with Infitec filters for film 3D, presumably
over/under though it would work for twin strip or IMAX. Just build the
color corrections into the print. With 3D returning to film this spring it
would be an additional advantage if silver screens could be avoided.
