i´ve used it at +50°C but I guess that doesn´t really compare ;-)

Useful to know - thats hot!

In the cold however it might be the case that the 744T will generate enough
heat internally so that if you keep it powered up and reasonably insulated
the cold may not be a problem for it.

If you record to CF only does the HD remain powered and spinning?

If it does it may be an advantage if it generates heat or may not be if it
gets cold enough to cause it a problem?

But it´s supposed to continue to record to the CF if the HD goes down
I think.

The bigger problem is that LiIon batteries don´t perform very good in
the cold. You should keep them warm or use external power with the
external battery carried under your jacket close to the body with a
cable runnign to the 744T

NiCd is better in the cold than LiIon. I heard that Aaaton made special
NiCd-batteries for the swedisch TV when they bought cantars. They said
the machine needs to operate at -20°C with internal batteries.

Besides the batteries, you may have a problem with the LCD display.
LCD becomes very sluggish below freezing. and can become un-responsive if it
gets cold enough. The LED backlights may not provide enough heat to keep
the display working at extreme cold. I have used a pocket hand warmer
placed under equipment with LCD's in the past to keep their surface temp
above the freezing point. Luckily the 744t and 722 have the LED VU displays
that aren't affected by extreme cold. (unlike other HD recorders)

Used it in about -2 C the other night without discernible incident but
that's still a ways off from where you are.

My understanding is that lithium battteries work the best in cold
weather. A nicad Np-1 on the back of a betacam at minus 30 (I'm in
Canada) lasts about 5 minutes. A lithium battery will lose a bit of
power but will should perform fairly normally at this temperature. I'm
a little confused by this report about special Aaton Nicads for cold
temperatures - do you have a link to this info?

this is complete news to me. Li-Ion batteries drop the voltage by a
very large amount when cooled down. They "recover" whem you warm them
after that but the base voltage greatly decreases in the cold.

The developer personally told me this.

Some recorders have a display heater ( just like a heated eyepiece on
camera's ) to avoid this disappearing of your LCD display.

But i did some minus 22 Celsius nights on a mountain in Austria, but
as long as you keep the recorder a bit warm overnight, and the int. HD
is spinning, things went/go rather well. The only thing some HD geeks
told me is that the platter can break more easily when it is that
cold, and you drop your HDR on the ground. Now that's something you
should also not do when temps are normal :-)

There are also some HD, i believe from Hitachi, that have a wider temp
spec, specially made for low temp jobs.
I think it's this type Endurastar J4K30/N4K30, or look here

R ( not sure if you can replace the SD HD yourself )

BTW; I don´t know how they ended up with the research. The guy from
Aaton told me that swedish TV wanted a garantee that the cantar would
work to spec sheet at -20°C.

That NiCads work better in cold in counter to everything I've ever
heard or read.
My understanding is that Lithiums are much less affected than NiCads by
cold.
I could be wrong but... you may want to check your sources.

Likewise...my understanding and experience have always been that
Lithiums are the best option for extreme cold, with others following in
various places in line behind them. NiCad and Alkaline are not far up
the list.

Are there newer Ni-Cad formulas that perform better in cold than
previous versions did? It all sounds a bit strange.

I do not know this story, but i do know that Aaton just released it's
new 10 hour lithium's Cantar Battery's this month, and i do know that
this Swedish thing happened at least one year ago, Afaik.

MAybe it´s the Li-Ion I use. I will re-think my supplier :-)

Thanks for the info.
