Complete Film Crew 35mm PAID (San Fernando)
Date: 2009-11-23, 10:36PM PST

Complete Crew for 35mm short.
Cameras and lites donated by a very prestigious camera rental for
first time filmaker.
I am a very experienced director with many films i shot in high-school
on 8mm and 3/4 inch.
I have been out of the business for a while while I studied medicine
and became a very successful physician.
Now I am coming back strong as a film maker.
This will be my first 35mm short film. I need a very strong crew in
all departments.
I am paying everybody $50 flat across the board to be fair to everyone
This is a paid gig and I expect everyone to be on point and
professional
This is a 4day shoot

* Location: San Fernando
* it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other
commercial interests
* Compensation: Fully Paid $50 cash for shoot/Per person + Meals

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure how to say this politely but if you are a very successful
physician, then you sure as hell can afford to pay at least minimum
wages. You are only insulting the people that you are trying to get
to work on YOUR film. I would really like to know how you can say you
are a very successful physician and not have enough respect to pay
people what they are worth. Just because you are looking for crew on
Craigslist, doesn't mean that people are worthless. You really need
to rethink what you're looking for and what you're willing to
compensate people.

Jon

Thanks for the info John. but I took Doves Three day Film School
seminar

Didn´t the U.S. invent slavery? If you don´t believe me just go into
any Starbucks or
MacDonald´s and ask your ¨nutritional service provider¨ how much he or
she makes for a living.
Their tears shortly followed by their squirting ´Macstrawberry shake´
all over their slavehand, (sorry management operative),
before running screaming into the street in their oversized Ronald
McDonald uniform should tell you all you need to know...

50 bucks?, I suppose he wants a Zaxnet system, some IFB´s, comteks,
a Fusion and a couple of CMITs with a side-dish of a Denecke slate.
Will he be providing lubricants or is he just going to dry-shaft all
his crew with
with a rusty 9 ft boom pole? Someone needs to explain to this jerk-off
how much
a single 35mm reel costs, then how the several hundred man-hours it
requires
to train and study the art and craft of film-making in order to become
remotely competent
in this hyper-technical format has to be factored-in, for EACH and
EVERY member of his TEAM,
not to mention, basic empathy and respect for your colleagues and
brother man...
Incredible pair of balls for a physician. He must have special
physicians
pants to accommodate his over-sized testes.

Anyway, I´m not sure about you guys, but I must still get asked at
least once a week by some
pond-life ´producer´ if I would´nt mind providing my 20+ years of
audiovisual wisdom for... free!
Oh and that equipment that I buy and service and upgrade and insure
constantly ALSO!!!????

Maybe we should all begin going to physicians and request
consultations, X-rays, diagnostics,
major surgery and after-care for well, nought?
Well, OK maybe fifty bucks a day, after all, removing an appendix is
only a short operation
and well it´s a good craic so hey, they wont mind working for free, it
´s clearly a job they enjoy
and anyway, it´s something that they can put in their reel...

¨I expect everybody to be on point and professional¨ Oh, because you
sir, quite clearly are...
FUCKWIT!

Here's the web site of the fellow who taught this guy that film crews
should never be paid to work on short films: http://dovsimensfilmschool.com/bio.html

Fact is, I think Dov may be correct re: short films.

I've worked on more than a few over the years -- for free or nearly
so. Sometimes, I've been one of the only crew compensated. These
projects have mostly been created by friends already in the industry:
script supervisors who want to move up the food chain, etc.

I also made a few no-budget shorts in the early years, using the quid-
pro-quo maxim and did my share of 18-hour days for others in payment.

Doing pro bono work is certainly a pain in the bum, but there is
satisfaction helping friends better themselves.

It's the audacity of this fellow's juxtaposition of a "successful
physician's career" with asking folks to work for $50/day + food that
rankles. Perhaps he ought to aspire to be a DP rather than a director
(What's the difference between a DP and God? God doesn't think he's a
DP. )

Don't see this so much as a reflection of the industry, but rather a
reflection of those outside it who aspire to play there.

Suggest you stop reading Craigslist for sound jobs; it will lower your
blood pressure.

this first class maniac take 400 for 2 day course , let say there are
20-30 people who willing to pay , becomes 8000-12000 .
, I guess the only thing they remember after is you just need to find free
of charge people which could be screwed :-)

Complete crew for Appendectomy PAID

Patient and pathology being donated by very sick street person for
first-time surgeon.

I am a very experienced medical person with many injuries I bandaged
for my kids while they were in school. Sometimes I used Band-Aids,
but
occasionally I used Professional Gauze Pads and Adhesive Tape.

I have been out of the medical business while developing a successful
career as a soundie. (Never made as much money as a physician;
some weeks I made less than a fry cook at McDonald's, but sure had a
lot of fun.)

Now I am coming back strong as a physician.

This will be my first operation where you actually cut into the
patient,
though I have extensive experience with the electric game where
you use tweezers and have to avoid the sides or else the nose lights
up and a buzzer sounds.

I need a strong O.R. crew in all departments: anesthesia, nursing,
orderlies, dramatic background music.

I am paying everybody _$75_ flat across the board because I don't
think their skills are worth anything, but still believe a surgical
operation
is a little more important than making a movie.

This is a paid gig and I expect everybody to show up with their hands
washed.

Interesting post Jan, but I disagree with your saying that it's not "so much
as a reflection of the industry." It is entirely part and parcel of the
industry at this time. Money is the only driving factor and skills are not
rewarded pretty much across the industry.

My latest bugaboo is the wide spreading reduction in the daily rate for
sound equipment, at least in television. The studios and networks are now
united in paying $350 a day for a package while always demanding more of the
latest; more tracks, more wires, more backups, more slates, more, more,
more.

O now it becomes an adversarial contention between the mixer and the UPM
about how much kit $350 buys, a constant negotiation about "addition" gear
and a struggle for owners to get a value for their investment. For me at
least, $300 doesn't get a UPM "everything."

D.

Oh, and what are the Steadicam owners getting these days for their measly
$60,000 invested? Oh wait. That's another bugaboo<g>.

As someone who is still in her "early years" in this industry, I
experience both the paid and laughable paycheck sides of the industry.
I just wanted to say that while I understand your point, Jan, and I
completely admire you as another woman sound mixer who is selfless in
your willingness to help out the newbies, there was one word that you
used that totally makes a difference between working for free and
getting scammed and being taken advantage of: "friend." Your words
were "Doing pro bono work is certainly a pain in the bum, but there is
satisfaction helping friends better themselves." For sure there is,
but this gentleman wasn't asking his fellow friends and industry
connections to help him out. He is a newcomer to the business and
apparently doesn't have any industry friends, and in that case, you
should have to pay for freelancer's services. I have no problem
helping out my fellow film-school grads here in LA and even friends of
friends. But someone I've never met, someone I can't vouch for as far
as food or treatment on set? That's when I have to say, whether it's a
short or not, you have to be prepared to pay people. How else do you
plan on making said friends and industry connections? This guy is
already drowning as far as that's concerned. Fair pay = respect for
someone's work and equipment investments. My buddies can get away with
an 18-hour free work day as we all try and make something of
ourselves. But Dr. Joe Shmoe trying to "hire" people he's never even
met? I'm afraid I have to disagree there. Especially cus he's got the
quote-unquote real job with a real paycheck.

How did some dilettante arrogant physician become "the industry"?
Yes, I am aware that "arrogant physician" is redundant. :-)

At least you have to give him credit for being honest. Perhaps
he is a psychiatrist trolling for new massochist patients with no
self-worth.

Hi, Amanda,

Yup, yup. yup re: friends. Fact is the script supervisor I was
thinking of in this post just directed her first episode of "Rescue
Me" this past week. Part of what made that possible was the crew and
production of "Rescue Me" got behind her short film in every way
imaginable. I mixed it as a favor to the "RM' sound mixer. Got a
couple of second unit days out of it, too.

Fact is, I like working on the second films made by guys like our
doctor. Having been totally burned both coming and going, his second
film will be greatly different.

$350/day is an outrage to be sure. Just say, "No." It wasn't until I
started saying, "No," that I got significantly more than that for the
gear.

Everybody together now: "No."

Hi Jan-

This $350 number seems to be coming from corporate as nearly as I can tell.
Maybe just Sony and Disney (notorious cheapskates!) but I am hearing the
same from from mixers on shows for both NBC and ABC.

What I have found is that UPMs now make it clear that they have extra
dollars for additional equipment but as a mixer, I have to negotiate those
items as a separate "line." So extra TC slates, more than a certain number
of wires, any playback, extra recorders, and "specialty items" like we all
carry as standard equipment in our kit need to be addressed "as needed."
Just more work for all involved and it never quite catches up to the $400 or
$425 I got a few years ago. C'est la vie.

D.
