My friend is buying a Panasonic HD900 camera and can't decide whether
to buy the accessory stereo shotgun that goes on the camera. I've done
dozens of shoots with this camera, but can't honestly say I've
actually heard any tracks from this mic (AJ-MC900G). It's pricey at
around $1300. Any comments on the quality of this mic? He does mostly
docs, so he definitely needs something on the camera (default channels
3 & 4). Comments?

Work with the camera all the time. Mic is good but i would use a
Sanken CS-1 instead. Much cheaper and sound better to my taste.

Or invest a bit more over the Panasonic mic and get the Sanken Stereo camera
mic and always know you have good stereo sound and ambience (albeit with
camera operator noise) available. Only have to buy it once!

Thanks for the prompt replies. I'll pass on the comments. I own the
Rode and like it a lot. I've also used the CS-1 and thought it was
also very good. I suggested the NTG-1 to him already. The other option
I've suggested is a shorter hypercardioid like one of the Audio
Technicas or a Rode. Scott, do you find the NGT-1 gets in the way if
you have a wider lens on the camera? I think the Panasonic accessory
mic is shorter. Charles, I think my friend would rather spend the
extra money on a better piece of glass. As he says: if he needs better
sound, he'll hire me.
Cheers, Chris Newton.
