PD6 Next Life, Whats the chance?

Alright here goes,

1)PD6 will work without the DVD-Ram, take it out and save power.

2)IDE 50 pin on PD6 main board.

3)No FAT32, UDF is the name of game. 4G limitation per partition, so even you have 32 gig CF its still gonna be 4G each.

4)3.3V operating voltage.

5)Get an 80G Toshiba 1.8 HD or plenty 4G CF due to software limitation. Or format one big UDF disk from a PC or Mac, this is a possibility.

6)Record to HD or a CF card only since theres no daisy chaining possibility due to some hi-density connector use for the DVD-Ram board (will explore further), possibility of mounting the HD or CF since DVD-ram are taken out.

7)PD6 mainboard 50pin IDE to Fostex HD board , ZIF to 1.8 adapter board comes with the PD6. Adapter board are for the Toshiba HD. Power supply cable to HD board.

8)CF card reader mounting options, A)Mod the cartridge to hold CF card reader, B) Strip the battery compartment and replace it with a CF card reader, power the PD6 externally.

I will mod it myself later this year, after i finish with my busy schedule.

Thanks, there will be only 2 outcome, mount the HD or hotswap CF.
Although ideally it should be, record to HD, mirror or file copy to
CF.

Hi!

I played with this modification a year ago. The problem is, that you
can't read the partitions with pc or mac that pd6 creates. The only
way to read the data is to write a dvd-ram with the bulit in writer or
ex-12. You can put a bigger hard drive in the pd6 and it will
particion it to as many 4gb particions as possible automatically, but
if you connect it to a computer it's not readable...

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the info provided. I do not have the PD6 with me now. A few question about your experiment.

1)Did you unplug and take out the PD6 DVD-Ram and just run it in HD and still the mounting fail?

2)Have you try mounting it on a Linux OS?

3)Whats the error message you get on the PC/Mac when mounting the drive thru PD6 firewire 4 pin?

Theres a couple of ways i could think of to try it out.

1)Format the HD with a PD606, strip the EX1 HD and install a fresh HD, format and partition it, remove it from EX1 and place it back on the PD6.

2)Install a CF card reader in place of the PD6 DVD-Ram.

Most likely the Master and Slave on the PD6 are set to CSEL (Cable select). That maybe the reason of why the PD6 will still fully function without the DVD Ram attach.

Remember the first 4 pin of a Toshiba 1.8 50pin hard drive is the Master and Slave setting, normal 50pin connector in the 1.8 chassis are actually 44pin with first 6 pin break.

Hi folks, I've just picked up a PD-6 and found this thread. Did you get anywhere with the CF card mod? I've seen a 1.8" toshiba drive mounted in the DVD RAM enclosure connected to the 50 pin IDE. In theory you could slap on an adaptor to CF right there. Am I right? Thanks...

Hi Everyone!

We began to assemble a program that can read all the partitions on the drive of the old pd6.

It works. Now we have a software that reads all partitions on the internal disk (or memory card) of the pd6.
We want to change the hd to cf or sd card, remove the dvd ram (it's consumption is too much...) and make the pd6 a memory card recorder. The other option is to keep the dvd ram as the second, backup media. 

The partitions size can not be changed (24 minutes of 6 track bwf 24/48 on each 1,4 Gb partition) but you will be able to simply use a memory card in the pd6 and a laptop with the software to read all partitions and files recorded  by the pd6. 
On the recording media (HD, CF, SD, etc.) there can be as many 1,4 Gb partitions as the media's size enables it, no more juggling with the dvd rams... And as we all remember pd6 can easily change between partitions during recording, it just splits the take to two parts in the second (sample) the partition is changing. 

We already have the program that can read all the partitions of the hard drive comes from the pd6 it just needs a user friendly look.

Any suggestions, opinions?
