Don't really think you can quantify it completely unless you state what
types of jobs and where you are located. If it's for a network you are gonna
get $75 with two RF mics, for other ENG type of jobs you can ask from $150
to $200 for that package with 2 RF mics and probably not meet much
opposition.
I don't think any ENG job is going to want the full package with 6 RF
channels unless the job needs additional RF mics. Fact is that unless you
are buying this for work with a specific client and you have negotiated it
up front, there is NO standard at all and everything depends on your
personal demand as a mixer and what your particular market will bear. It's
all find and dandy to add up retail rental house prices and set some value
but very few people will pay you rental house prices, nor will they hire you
with a similar package provided by a rental house. In Seattle for standard
corporate jobs I'm taking out a similar package with 2 RF mics included for
$200 per day. Unfortunately in most cases the gear is part of one's
advertising budget to get jobs and you have to make accommodations and find
the sweet spot that keeps you busy. If one were to try to rationalize the
purchase of gear strictly from the return on equipment rental it would
rarely add up in a way that makes financial sense in a reasonable period of
time.

For that kind of sound package you should charge the least $800/day...

Heck Sergio I don't think a big feature mixer get's $800 a day for a full
film package. No client in the ENG, EFP, Corporate world is going to hire a
mixer with a package for those kinds of rates. Nice dream, but not reality.
I'm just charging between 450 and 1250 per 10 hours... equipment
included. The Net jobs, I get to use the photographer's gear so...
it's the "Labor" rate of aprox 400 for 8... if I'm to genlock
(trilevel or whatever)two or more cameras... or just show them all a
slate... it's going to cost$. All the old "standards" are out the
window... every man for hisself!!! bee good, charge what you want...
@200 per day... WTF sinking the ship for everyone... that is the the
"Anchor" in all the crap heard here from supposedly experienced ops.
JeEEZus... I ' know veggies are cheaper... but how long can you live
with your parents ???

With labor? $550/day seems to be pretty standard, regardless of what
extra stuff you have. No one will pay much more (if at all) than that
for EFP work, so it doesn't really matter what you charge...only what
they pay. I've got a Zaxcom ENG Hop and 3 411 units, 1 190 unit and
the like, and charge $550/day. Is that too low? I don't think so for
my market (Dallas). I just give them an all-inclusive option. No
choices. $550/day or walk, unless it's a weekly rate, of course.
Scripted drama of course is different, especially for one-man-band
(corporate stuff specifically).

What's with all the anger? We are not talking commercials or high end jobs
here...we are talking about running around with a bag and a couple of
wireless. You just are not going to find clients in my neck of the woods
that are going to pay big bucks for gear. You can find a well equipped sound
mixer with decent experience for between $450 and $700 inclusive ANYWHERE in
the USA. I'm not dragging anything down...I'm on the high end for Seattle.
When I talk with producers coming to town they aren't paying anyone anywhere
much more. Who is paying you a thousand bucks for a bag job?
I said $800/day (labor included) off the top of my head, but thats
usually how I negotiate a rate with a producer and later negotiate a
"happy" deal. Actually, My going rate for a ENG package (2
wireless, boom & SD302 mixer) is $550/day. Extra stuff like stereo
camera hop is $75/day, extra wireless is $25, 1 plug-on transmitter is
$25, 1 stick mic is $20, 1 IFB is included but any extra Comteck's are
$20/day, do the math... It adds up to $715/day. Labor & batteries are
Included...
This is my dreamworld and work just fine, sooo You are invited

Oh get real. It's $200 just for the gear. Labor is extra.
Eric
I thought you were suggesting $800 for the gear! :)
For corporate, eng, and efp (and some "reality" and sports)
$450-$550 per day (10 Hours)
with mixer, boom, 1 shotgun, 1 channel wireless.
I always bring ridiculous amount of other gear, and have 4 channel
mixer.. and tell the producer what extras will cost if they want them.
I carry 2 more shotguns, 2 hypercardioids, 2 wired lavs, and at least
1 more wireless
I am starting to get clients who will also want double system.. that's
a whole different set of negotiations, and really makes you want to
have a sound crew, and is hard for me to consider a "bag job" I am
still working out what I want to do there, as I like doing the EFP/ENG
gigs...
! do have one corporate client to whom I allow a half day for 2 mics,
mixer and I for $375. But they are very fast to pay. and their half
day is 4 hours
I have quit accepting gigs where I can't use my tools. The one time I
agreed, the gear was not only ancient, half of it didn't work. Thak
god the project producer understood and believed me whan I explained
this... (and has gone back to hiring me with my own gear)
Best I have done: A client who rented another $150 worth of my stuff,
on top of a rate of $550 for 10... so... $700 for 10.. and it was a
complicated mix, with 4 sources to 3 outputs.
Best of luck to us all!
Chris Mills
Charlie... If I mis-percieved that you were working for 200 a day
inclusive, I apologize.
Some twits here in NOLA will do whatever is being offered for
whatever is being offered, and YES... it does get in my craw that so
many are so hungry that they will sacrifice their own soul to get a
piece of this crud... 550 does seem to be the ssorta "Bag" rate...
I get 750+ expenses for a HD recorder 3 wires boom, slate and four
comteks.... more, costs more.
18 hours on location with a protools rig, Yamaha O1v96, SD744t
Time code to three trilevel genlocked cameras etc etc etc... NFL/
espn ? films intro for the saints 06 season... MRB prods... over 2k
$. IA478 boom ops working for 17-19 an hour... The NABET deal is
pure BS... only IBEW is giving a fair shake... prevailing wage is out
the window... bid high and provide quality... if they don't think
enough of their own production to compensate you fairly... how do you
think you will be treated on the shoot?
Frankly, things are so non-standardized these days, I never really
know until the post mortem what BS is going to get dropped in my
lap. I've learned to be disgusted with the folks who run television,
subsequently, I have branched into other avenues in media. If I could
afford it, the sound gig would be strictly for clients who
"understand" from more than the bottom line.
Whitney... if you bring that rig once, and don't charge for it... you
have set a standard for yourself. Sure you will get the call again if
you do a good job and don't piss off the editors and they remember you
amongst the hundreds of techs they meet... be assured, they will
expect that level of gear and performance everytime regardless. When
you get a little older, have a kid in college, house note... etc.
This can become a rough road, if you are young, dumb, and full of....
it probably doesn't matter. Time will tell...
Sorry Again... this whole issue has been pissing me off since Billy
(paid by special interests) Tauzin C0- Authored the telcomm act of 96.
and sent the media to the trough of greedy pigs...

This is "Jeff C" in New Orleans... my prev post (soundmixer77id) was
from another account...
Wow I wasn't trying to start any problems. I currently have a 302
mixer a 3 lectrosonics wireless. I was just trying to see what people
were asking for the 4 channel package thanks everyone
Hi Whitney,
You should know the firestorm of controversy started by any "how much"
question... no problem, just letting off steam. Charlie knows, I am
not big on the 744 as a transcription machine for 75 or
whatever.... I reacted without thinking, My bad....
Roughly, I figure that package at about 22,000....probably closer to
25 initial cost, insurance ??? maint ? oh by the ways? . We all know
that getting even 1% of value for a rental from production can be a
hump... I would think an investment in a Long Term Treasury bond
more profitable...
I need a 302 since my 442 rarely uses more than three channels at a
time... I'm trying to lose weight. If you sell yours, or want to
work out a swap deal. I'll meet you in GA. for a test drive... my
old PSCM4 is still chugging along perfectly.... if I need more inputs
or outs, I just throw the wendt X2 in the bag... I just sold one of
my 400 systems on 22... my old 190's seem to be working fine... the
400s come out for clients who appreciate non companded audio and don't
start a job interview by negotiating my rate downward.... The pack
you re using now will fill the bill on 99.99% of eng these days....
when you get into that 4 wirelii, stereo hop stuff... the hours get
longer, and the rates go down.... Yes, I've done "Extreme Fakeover"
and crap like "Elimi-date" and other asstd re-all idiot TV, running
around with a 38lb pack for 14 hours rolling on everything.... never
again. To each, his, her own...
All best'
Jeff C
No problem, my 2008 book rate for a straight ahead corporate listen to the
air conditioner job is $500 for 10 hours and $200 for a gear package with a
couple of RF mics, a Lectro IFB, 442 and a good mic. That's on the high side
of things for Seattle and I doubt any of the more youthful mixers in Seattle
are charging more than $550 for the same package. For the extra money I
provide many years of experience, equipment redundancy, confident attitude
on the shoot and lots of follow through after the shoot when needed to make
sure everyone is pleased. While I do roll my 744t on nearly everything, I
charge extra for transcription and for delivery of uncompressed files. I'm
also understanding of production changes and demands with my good clients
and rarely do I charge them for cancellations nor do I ding them excessively
for occasional unplanned overtime because I always remember the many 2 hour
full days they have given me in the past. In short, I bring good gear, I do
a good job, and I try to be flexible and fair. This has allowed me to make a
decent living, purchase a house and have some hope for a reasonable
retirement when that time comes.
Jeff...you're really gonna hate me when I start bringing the 788t in the bag
to all my gigs! :)
I would love to invite you all to move to Nashville to help us change
things. The rates here with gear (mixer, boom mic, two wirelesses)
range from $350-$450/10 hr day. There is one person that goes for
$500 with gear. Prices are largely driven by the camera ops that get
the jobs. They will work for a set price and expect you to come in
for a smaller piece of the pie. Almost all of them keep their clients
close and you have no way of going directly to the client to negotiate
your rate.
No matter what your market is someone will always work for less.
I think most of us enjoy what we do and would like to be paid a decent
wage for what we bring to the table, experience, gear and technical
knowhow.
Thanks
David Rogers
Why i'm not working with local camera ops.... christmas and new
years , no OT...
Charlie, I'm really sorry, everything you wrote in response is
exactly how I wish I could articulate things... to both us, and the
"above the line" nut crunchers...
Thanks
Jeff c
A "listen to the air conditioner job"---good one Charlie.

In Atlanta, the going rate that I charge for 10hr is $450/day plus
gear.
The gear rates I charge (for top of the line gear) start at $200 for
mixer, boom and two wireless.
(Schoeps CMIT, 442, and 411a w/ COS-11s)
I charge $50/each additional 411a. (two cast, stereo hops <my SR comes
Wed! Woot!>) $200
Comteks are $25 for for the first transmitter/receiver and $25 for
each additional.
Total would be $850/day.
