If you want to do it simply and pasively (as in a cable
or adapter vs. a mixer, etc.) then you can use resistors
to combine the signals into mono without shorting them
together and making them mono everywhere (which is
what you are doing now).

If you want a SWAG approximation, I'd try a pair of
5K-ohm (5000-ohm) resistors from L & R, and where
they join together will be mono, but likely at a lower
level due to the (unknown) device source and load
impedances. This may require some make-up gain
in the mono destination equipment.

Using something like this is nice and simple, but not
a unversal solution for every known piece of equipment.
The downside to this kind of simplicity is some amount
of dependence on (interaction with) the equipment.

Or look for an old Peter Engh r21t, which did this exact thing and
more.
Otherwise you are stuck with having to either run a little active 2-to-
mono
mixer off one side of the split, or find some kind of mini-xformer
solution.
(I made one rig like this by taking the small transformers out of the
inline
Sescom units.)

Seems like it's about time for Peter to manufacture another run of the r21t.
I luckily purchased two of them and they have served me incredibly over the
years for IFB feeds.

I've emailed a few months ago to Peter, and I was told this box is
discontinued since SD442 mixer has appeared.
Nevertheless I'm using that mixer for ENG apps, I'm still missing a
box like that from my run and gun bag. I do hope Peter will continue
manufacturing this box....

I did just this, with a couple of 6.6k ohm resistors. Works fine and
no apparent level loss.

Several months ago I contacted SD about creating a circuit diagram for
the mono tape level output. They came back with a diagram and I built
the cable, but it doesn't keep the L and R separate downstream on the
other leg of the cable from the mono tape output. There is still a
bit of bleed between the channels. I talked to them a few more times,
and they were very helpful, but never heard back about a new diagram
that keeps the channels separate. A show that I was working on needed
the line level mono cable to feed a comtek tx owned by production - I
use lectros and go into them mic level with the diagram SD has for
adding a mono mic output. The show ended before I resolved the issue
so I kinda forgot about it until it came up here again. Sound Devices
posted it to their website after I told them I was getting bleed, so
maybe it is just me? I'm just curious if anyone else has tried to
make a line level mono output AND feed a stereo signal from a
302/442?

seems to be really the place for an optical coupler. I don't know what
they are now (I used tham 20 years ago :-), but I beg you can find a
device with two inputs and two outputs optically coupled (so no feedback)

the peter engh box looks like an elegant solution with lots of uses
(i'll buy 1 if he starts making them again).
previously i have summed the line (or even headphone) output of the
back up recorder (or camera) to send a feed for a producers monitor.
it is another click along the audio chain but it works ok.

btw, has any one had a producer ask for a scanner instead of a
monitor? a job i did last year was complicated by the fact that the
producer thought a scanner was called a monitor and couldn't
understand why she couldn't "tune in" to different sources on the fly
with the monitor i gave her. despite the low quality of the audio a
scanner is not a bad way to work, especially if 1 of the sources is
the mix, (and the producer actually knows the name of the thing they
want :-)

When Peter Engh fixed my r21t a few years ago he mentioned that he
might make a new one to more better match the SD 302. I guess he
never did, but the 302 is popular enough that I hope he considers it.
A 302 + a r21t is A LOT lighter than a 442..... BTW, Peter Engh
equipment is beautifully made, works well and is really well
supported, but it is not cheap.

Mono sees both signals, each through 5k resistor. If it's not a very
low impedance input (very few are these days), there's some signal loss
but not too much.

Left and right see each other, through a T-pad consisting of 2 5k
resistors in series and the input impedance of the mono device in
parallel with the middle. So not much signal jumps across.

Your resistor values may vary.
