21 Days (UK) 1940

Hey,

The film was made in 1937 and not released until 1940 and released as "21 Days Together" in the US. This is the second film with Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Directed by Basil Dean, it has some nice atmospherics and the usual over-wrought performance by Olivier.

The gist is that Larry (Olivier) kills Wanda's (Leigh) black-mailing triamist husband in self defense and instead of allowing his girlfriend's reputation (and his own) to be ruined, he leaves the body on a dark street when a mentally challenged loser finds it and steals what money is in the corpse's pocket and then is arrested for the killing.

Tick, tock, as Fritz Lang would say. It's 21 days to the trial on a capital offense and Larry is torn as to whether he should come forward. His brother (Leslie Banks) has assisted in the cover up and he's up for a judgeship and he's doomed if Larry spills the beans.

It's interesting how plotting what is essentially a love story wrapped around a dead body challenges the moral fibers of the writers in what has to end happily. Wish the French had made this one, especially in 1937. Nice cinematic diversion for Olivier and Leigh fans and not much more than that.

I noted in the subject that it was from the UK and that is the correct title and if you google "21 Days film" or search on IMDb with "21 Days" it will lead you right to the film I reviewed.
