This actor played secondary roles, tv leads, and was in great demand at one
time.
His best asset was the deep round tone in his voice. His appearance made him
good for adventures.
He had begun to do quite a lot of advertising before suddenly stopping work
on tv
and film.

I heard some scandalous speculation about his retirement from film, but in
fairness
to him nothing came of it. I include this in the hope it sparks a memory.

His advertising work blossomed immediately and as a result his voice was
recognisable
anywhere.(He did many voice-overs)
I thought I had heard him recently, but it couldn't have been him, the voice
belonged
to a younger man. he must be at least 65 yrs old, more likely 70.

I doubt Americans will know him, so I am relying on old Brits.
Thankyou

Stone me.

You can't offer a single title he starred (or played a secondary role)
in? How well-known is he (compared to the famous Sirs, like Anthony
Hopkins, Ben Kingsley, Ian McKellen, Laurence Olivier, Richard
Burton)...?

I have a memory of his face and voice. I had thought his switch into
advertising
voice-overs might have triggered something. Hardly a Burton Hopkins
Kinglsley
Oliver thread.
I'll give it some more thought and ask around some more. Maybe I'll get back
on this thread.
Thanks for your inputs.

Your post stirred something in my memory.

Patrick Allen. (Please forget that gossip thing)

His acting career did seem to peter out, after the 1980's though.

Hmmm. Probably recognize him if I saw him - very busy actor in his heyday
both in movies and TV http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0019996/ I've seen a
number of the movies and TV series mentioned. He seemed to have worked
pretty consistently right up to 2004 - he died in 2006. I can only assume
that his health deteriorated in the later years causing the slowing down.

Charles Gray? He seemed to own "Mycroft Holmes" on the telly.
Also narrated The ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. "Put your knees together
and your hands on your hips..."
