Netflix to delay renting Warner Bros. latest DVDs

SAN FRANCISCO – Netflix's 11 million subscribers will have to wait
nearly an extra month to rent the latest movies by Warner Bros.

Under an agreement announced Wednesday, Netflix's DVD-by-mail service
won't send out Warner Bros.' latest DVD and Blu-ray discs during the
first 28 days after they hit the market.

The deal is a first for Netflix. The company expects to reach similar
agreements with other major movie studios later this year.

The moratorium will give Warner Bros. a chance to sell more discs to
consumers who can't wait to see the studio's latest home releases.

In return for the concession, Netflix will get a discount on Warner
Bros. discs. And it'll be able to offer more of the studio's movies
and TV shows for subscribers to watch over the Internet.

Dunno about Redbox but for those of us who still like going to the
movies, we might not be obsolete just yet:

Are they trying to discourage people from RENTING (and I think this
*could* be extended to kiosk like Redbox, too) and make them want to
BUY (like at Walmart) first?

Sure you could just rent it from bigbox places like Blockbuster;
though Blockbuster is a falling star, not rising (Netflix IS the
future!). Hmm? What if the movie studios change that, too? What if
they say:

"Buy [insert title here] on Tuesday January 5th, rent it Tuesday
February 2n!"

As way to make ALL people pretty much *have* to purchase it before
they rent if they want it bad enough? Of course the idea is to prop up
limp DVD sales. The fact that Netflix plans to announce other studio
deals later says it's headed that way.

This move by Warner Brothers is very reminiscent of something that
happened almost 30 years ago ... when the same company decided that it
was not going to allow its tape and disc titles to be rented.

I remember when DVDs were first coming out, the head of WB was on TV
saying the goal of DVD was to create a format people would pay full
price for, killing "pay per view" and the like (at the time Adelphia
Cable was running ads telling people to tape PPV movies to build up
their collection). I could see this as an attempt to kill DVD rental
and move the market into two halves, DVD sales and online digital
sales. If iTunes has the movies the same day the DVD comes out, we'll
have our answer.
