Following along the lines of ther posts....Name your ONE favorite Makeup
Artist...

Since I know so many and am a member of that brother and sisterhood, I will
refrain, except mention the grandfather of all makeup artists:

Lon Chaney

Any others?

This post reminds me of the old Berle (burlesque?) bit. You know, The
guy sez " let's make up." Then a makeup guy shouts, "MAKEUP!" and our
hero gets a big powder puff in the puss.
Well, Berle was never subtle.

I don't know much about this field, but I've like the work of one Michael
Westmore for some time.

Since you seem to know about this subject, let me ask you this: Are all those
"Westmores" in the makeup field related? There's Michael Westmore of "Star
Trek: Next Gen" and "Mask" fame. But in the credits of classic films I see
guys like Perc Westmore, Wally Westmore, and maybe another (Bud Westmore?).
Know anything about these folks?

Yes, all the Westmores are related. Brief family history:

There was the father, George (who did makeup & hair). He had 6 sons, who
became makeup artists:

Monte (Sr.), Wally, Perc (pronounced PURSE), Ern, Bud and Frank.

Monte (Jr), Marvin and Michael are the sons of Monte (Sr).

Pamela Westmore is the granddaughter of Wally. Kevin and Kandace are the son
and daughter of Marvin.

The film business is on the craft level run like guilds, where jobs are handed
down from father to son or daughter.

These unions have very desirable jobs and very difficult to get into and so
these jobs tend go to family members.

The Westmores are just one example of this.

I learned first hand how extremely competent Hollywood craft members are, when
I acted in a film which had a good story line where affirmative action money
for minority filmmaking gave us a crew that was hilariously incompetent.

I went to see a rough cut with a UCLA Film School grad, who had won all kinds
of prizes as a writer. We became ill from watching the film, rushed home and
hit our film books with a vengeance.

We take Hollywood's competence for granted. It's only when it's absent that we
realize just how good a job these behind the scenes people do.

Of course Lon Chaney deserves the title but as you already mentioned him,
I'll name Jack Pierce.

Hard for me to pick *one* favorite, so I won't.

Dick Smith does fantastic aging makeups (up to a point-- when he has to
do centenarians they start looking somewhat alike).

Rick Baker has done some beautiful work, most notably his excellent
Lugosi makeup for Martin Landau.
