Well, repeating a concept from another thread: France in the early
1890s. Film is rooted in realism; it's original visionaries thought that
to be the ultimate use of the new form. Thanks be, reason prevailed.
Well, realism is a funny term. It always begs the question: Whose realism?
In painting and in film, I have seen a dozen or so different kinds of
realism that didn't resemble each other very much. Realism is always
somebody's fantasy about what reality really is.
