Weird film and the only things in common with the book by
Richard Price are the title and gangs in the Bronx.

The Eagles song "In The City", was great at the end.

Structurally, it's The Odyssey and many other myths and fairy tales,
except that the monsters and witches are replaced by bizarre humans.
The book by Richard Price (and the film by the same name) was called
The Wanderers, not the Warriors. Great book; shitty movie.
THE WARRIORS is based on a novel by Sol Yorick who based his work on
some ancient Greek battle. I forget the details. Yorick was a
confirmed Marxist and his novel had a whole political slant that is,
to say the least, quite absent from the film.
Series of battles, actually -- it's based upon the Anabasis by
Xenophon, which details a group of Greek mercenaries who were hired
to take part in a Persian coup. When the coup leader died, they were
trapped deep in enemy territory and had to fight their way to the sea.

It's a good song, but completely wrong for the film. It's 1979 and
Walter Hill can't find a New York punk band to do the theme?
Hill may not have had the final say--several of his movies have been
somewhat high-jacked. "The Long Riders" was co-produced by James
Keach, which is why there's some dry stretches involving Jesse James;
the good bits of that movie usually involve someone named Carradine.
And "Broken Trail" was produced by Robert Duvall, which may explain
the padding of that part.
