I don't have one.
A rule is something less than a law. It carries with it the idea that
exceptions to its dictates may exist.
With that preface, I find that people who can tell me their "favorite movie
of all time" are generally decidedly unserious about films, usually to the
point of being imbecilic about them. Such people will often answer the
question with "Titanic!" or "The Shawshank Redemption!" or something of the
like (and always with a exclamation point).
You can forgive it from the young, who are apt to say any crazy shit that
captivates them at the moment, but if you are a grown adult who has seen a
decent number of films, there can be no single answer. If someone has such a
foundation of movie experience, and still insists on denominating a single
film as their "favorite", I just chalk it up to an affectation and move on.
Somebody feels to need to make a point about themselves by singling out one
film as their "marker", and so they do. It is the wampeter of their chosen
granfalloon.
There are worse sins.
I agree completely.
Different films move me in different ways. While I'll admit there are
several films which I hold near and dear because of the emotions they
stir in me, I can't say any of them are my favorite.
I really, really like a little known film from the 70s titled Between
the Lines. It's about a rag tag group of reporters who work for an
underground, as they were called then, newspaper. It's not a
particularly good movie, but it moves me because it reminds me of my
early days as a reporter. It is also the first movie I saw in which
Marilou Henner was topless. ;-)
It's not my favorite movie, tho.
The Alamo also holds a special place in my heart because it was the
first movie I saw in an old fashioned movie palace... the Fox Theater
here in St. Louis. It has since been renovated and now hosts a healthy
roster of plays and musicals. Each time my wife and I see a show
there, I think of The Alamo.
The movies I enjoy because of the acting are quite numerous, but I
can't claim any of them as my favorite.
Good question, tho.
Tom
But what if the answer is "Airplane!"?
That joke aside....there's not a damn thing wrong with those movies
you mentioned being someones fave of all time...(though
Titanic...err..okay) Favorite doesn't nessecerily mean it's the one
they consider the best.
> your favorite movie of all time!
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
(waves to Frank Mahoney, wherever he is)
although our horrible treatment by Disney working on the DVD almost
ruined it for me, but that's not the film's fault
