French Cancan (1954) is listed as a musical, but there is only slight
singing in it. There is some dancing however. The film was made by Jean
Renoir and features Jean Gabin as the founder of Moulin Rouge. It is the
story of how the poor girl Nini is lured away from her baker boyfriend to
become Gabin's mistress and a woman of the theatre. The film is quite good,
and the dancing scenes are alive with humour. However, sometimes I thought
Renoir could move the camera about a bit. It was quite stationary in many
scenes where it would move in a modern film. I am no director, but i got
hung up on this detail somehow. But a nice little film with some nice
dancing and girls kicking the Cancan.

All color, light and joy. Not quite as capable of ruining a bad mood as
"Singing in the Rain", but certainly ballpark.

I liked it too. Not sure how factual it was but that didn't matter,
it was good to look at. Can't think of any film with Jean Gabin that
I've disliked, I'm sure he made some clunkers in his long career but I
seem to have missed them.
