Russian "Sherlock Holmes" TV Series

I finally got all 11 parts of the Lenfilm TVseries "Sherlock Holmes".
This lavish repackaging of the Canon stars Vasili Litvanov as Holmes
and Vitali Solomin as Watson and presents a difficult problem in
comparison with other adaptations of the Doyle works because (a) is is
Russian and therefore darkly introspective and (b) the scriptwriters
have taken bits and pieces of existing stories and recombined them to
form new episodes. Comparisons to the Rathbone and Brett versions of
the stories aside, I found the Lenfilm series to be absorbing (on it's
own merits), beautifully photographed, superbly set and scored. It
would be better to speak Russian to get the full impact of these
stories, but for me, the subtitles will have to do. A wonderful
package and fascinating to see how another culture views the events at
221B Baker Street.

I saw a few episodes of the Russian series a while back, those on The Sign
Of Four (The Treasure of Agra, they call it). I was surpised by how good it
was. Of course they had to pick just the right buildings in Russia as
locations, and you didn't have the feeling of London all the time. But it
was thoroughly Victorian, and all the production details were good, as you
point out.

There's a new Sherlock Holmes series coming out of England this year, or
at least a pilot. Called simply "Sherlock", it's got some guy named
Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman from The Office (UK) as
Watson, plus Rubert Graves as Insp. Lestrade.

It's from Mark Gatiss (League of Gentlemen) and Steven Moffatt, who've
also worked on the revamped Doctor Who series, so there is some hope it
could be good.
