I don't think it's you, Stuart. I have the movie and I've always noticed the
same thing whenever I watch it. I think there was more to his line,
originally. Like, "This is what happens when a big shark eats a woman." Or
something to that effect.

Saying, "This is what happens." is choppy and certainly doesn't fit Hooper's
talkative character.

Another question I've always wondered about.

Did Quint smash the radio because he didn't want anybody else horning in on
his catch, or was he just retarded?

I don't know.

Hear of Moby Dick? He was obsessed just like Capt. Ahab
(the parallels are even stronger in the Jaws novel).

He doesn't want Brody's constant fussiness and worrying to mess
up their hunt. Brody's wife tried calling earlier and Quint
wouldn't let her speak to him. Rather than have Brody screw
things up (in Quint's mind, anyway) by calling for help, he smashes
the radio to avoid any problems from mainland. (And, of course, it's
a good plot gimmick, so the three of them can get no help in
later scenes)

I've always thought it was a Captain Ahab syndrom. Him or the Beast and
noone else.

Exactly.

Interestingly enough, however, there was no reference in the novel to
the U.S.S. Indianapolis.

I actually recommend Jaws 4: The Revenge (this time its personal!).
Not because it is good, but because it is a very bad big-budget film.
You can learn a lot about movies by watching a film like this because
the subtle manipulation that big-budget movie use (music, close-up, etc)
to get you to identify with the characters completely fail in this case;
so all you get is the sense that you are being manipulated and you
become more aware of the film techniques going on, trying (and failing)
to draw you in.

I also used to have arguments with an old roommate over which
was better - Jaws 2 (filmed in Panama City, where he's from) or
Jaws 3D (filmed in Orlando, where I'm from): "Jaws 3 was boring."
"Oh, yeah - at least the shark didn't eat a helicopter in it.", etc., etc.
