Ditzy socialite with a heart of gold, Irene Bullock (Carole
Lombard) finds "forgotten man" Godfrey Smith (William Powell) in
a scavenger hunt. Eventually Godfrey is taken in as the family
butler for the Bullocks and screwball antics and romance ensue.
---------------------

that being said, I found this movie to be quite refreshing. I
doubt if they are able to find actors of this quality these days.
Quite a cute story line. William Powell was fantastic as was
his supporting cast. You owe yourself about 90 minutes of
respite on this one.

I got the idea from someone else in this NG so thanks, whomever
you are. Now, I can make it available to everyone.

If you enjoyed that one, watch Ruggles of Red Gap with Charles
Laughton. Equally hilarious, in a similar, but more rural vein.

This was better than the color remake starring Cary Grant.

They are both "funny butler" movies but I like My Man Godfrey
but didn't like Ruggles of Red Gap, because the butler wasn't
funny enough, but it's confusing to talk about that movie,
the funny character is played by the actor Charles Ruggles,
making me look for other Charles Ruggles movies, but the
character actually called Ruggles (the butler) is unfunny,
or so I recall.

Gotta be smarter than the tool.

I have to agree with you. I've seen the CG one and enjoyed it.
But this one is much better. William Powell made a convincing
Butler and CG never did.

Fellas, I got news for you--Cary Grant never starred in a remake of MY
MAN GODFREY. You're thinking of David Niven. And June Allyson had the
Carole Lombard role. (In what universe would it make sense to cast a
Carole Lombard part with June Allyson?)

Thank you for the correction. And you are correct. June Allyson
didn't make much sense. Guess Gracie Burns was busy.

My opinion: In what universe would it make sense to cast June Allyson?

I apologize. I was thinking of "Arsenic And Old Lace" another fine
"screwball comedy".So back to "Godfrey". Niven had the butler part
down but not the "forgotten man" role.
