It's a topic I see come up pretty regularly. Until recently it was
thought of as rare... but when the topic comes up it's usually ill-
defined.

So, I figured it would be interesting if we made a categorized list.

Rules.
- A show & unrelated film of an existing franchise does not count,
unless the film is specifically of that series (Superman Returns is
not a spin-off of Smallville). A reboot/reimagining of a franchise
that started as a series counts as per categories below.
- Animated series & films are left out (at this point)

1. Direct theatrical movie spin-offs during the show's run.
- Batman (1966 - 1968) / Batman (1966)
- The X-Files (1993 - 2002) / The X-Files (1998)

2. Direct theatrical movie continuations.
- The X-Files (1993 - 2002) / The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)

3. Ambiguous theatrical prequels.
[Films that may or may not prequels to the series in question.]
- Starsky & Hutch

4. Ambiguous theatrical continuations
- Mission: Impossible
- Maverick

5. TV movie or straight to DVD continuations.
- The Incredible Hulk / Trial of...; Return of ...; Death of ...
- Six Million Dollar Man / various.
- Stargate SG1 (1997 - 2007) / Stargate: The Ark of Truth; Stargate:
Continuum

6. Theatrical remakes of episodes (during series)
- Doctor Who / Dr Who & the Daleks.

7. Theatrical remakes of episodes (after series)

8. New continuity films (during series)

9. New continuity films (after series).

"Tell you the truth, it's even a little better for me if he goes. I mean,
he's a middle-aged kid. When I signed up with the network he sat up all
night figuring out the fringe benefits and the pension plan. And he
started to make lists this year. Lists of everything; subway stops,
underwear, what he's gonna do next week. If somebody doesn't watch out
he'll start making lists of what he's gonna do next year and for the next
ten years. Hey, suppose they put him with a whole family of list makers. I
didn't spend six years with him so he should turn into a list maker. He'll
learn to know everything before it happens, he'll learn to plan, he'll
learn how to be one of the nice dead people. Are you listening? "

Not really based on an episode. Just that the movie had Daleks in it.
And not even quite the same Daleks. IIRC, they ran on electric rails.
And not quite the same Doctor. He wasn't a Time Lord.

But yes, it qualifies as a movie spin-off.

The Twilight Zone movie.

> 9. New continuity films (after series).

I think Green Hornet qualifies. Although technically based on the radio
show, it wouldn't have been made if the TV show hadn't existed, and it
kept the Kato-as-Kung-Fu-expert characterization from the show.

Neither was the Doctor in his first series.

No, really based on an episode/serial. They ran off an electric floor
in the series.

As was the second one (based on the second Dalek story).

The failure of the second stopped the third being based on the third
Dalek story.

It seems.

Woefully incomplete and unsorted.
