Thanks for the link, Arun! Though I've only had a brief look, I
don't think the song I'm looking for is in there, which is strange
since it was definitely a stand-out number. I'm going to need to
listen to my copy and see if it looks like one of them.
As always it's hard to know what the person transcribing the song
has chosen to title the song, but I've most often seen it as "Baithe
Hain Kya." It's the nightclub number, Helen dancing with big
tailfeathers (and TWO tiaras!) and a second woman whose only role is
to run quickly past the camera singing "La la la laaa, la la laaaaaa."
Probably Lata was the playback singer. Hopefully I'm just not
instantly recognizing it in the list...

I've double-checked against my recording of the song, and the one I'm
thinking of is definitely not at

It starts with a lot of "La la's," but the first words spoken are
"Baithe Hain Kya," that's for sure, and that's the title given on the
Jewel Thief DVD. Very very strange that this hasn't been
transliterated, as I thought it was one of the most popular songs from
the film (on second thought, it's probably Asha Bhonsle singing it).
If anybody has a lead on the lyrics to this song, I'd much appreciate
it...I'm getting a replica dress made from the number, and performing it
in March, so it would help me to learn it (and if the English lyrics are
there as well, it will help me understand it).

SDB, the composer, used the twin track effect to great use (the first time!)
in this number -- truly wonderful.
His son, RDB also used this in many numbers such as Ka jaaon sajan, bindiya
tarse, karta katra
and some others through 70s and 80s.
Infact the legend is that this Jewel Theif number was ghost-composed by RD
Burman himself.
Probably folks over at rec.music.indian.misc wuld be able to get you the
complete
lyrics.

Incidentally, when you talk about the twin track effect, do you mean
two audio tracks (ie Stereo) or overdubbing the voices in some way?

The overdubbing. The best example of this probably is the Ijazat number,
"Katra Katra milti hai"
composed by RD Burman and sung by Asha Bhosle. This is a contender for
an all-time best hindi film song ever composed!

would you feel about transcribing and translating "Baithe Hain Kya?" I

Thanks so much to everybody who's helped me out with this! I now have
a complete transliteration AND a translation, which highlights what a
great song it really is. When I kick the butts of the other people in
the pageant -- who are all doing Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston -- I'll
be thinking of y'all. Though I'm not sharing the prize money. :)
