India has been laughing for the last few years. Comedy shows
are now part and parcel of major television entertainment channels.
Some news channels have also started adopting short cartoon comedies
as interludes. Amid this gaggle of giggles, one particular show stands
tall. It not only dwarfs the rest but also has gone on to grab the
highest TRP amongst the non-fiction programmes. The whole country
knows it by the name Comedy Nights with Kapil .
Kapil’s Comedy Nights provide a distinctive take on the
everyday life and like life it is full of contradictions. For instance
curtains are raised with flourish before every Kapil night yet the
programme discards the codes of other staged comedy shows. There is no
judge, no contestant, and no compere. The only bouncing board of the
show, Shiddhu Paaji, sits in the middle of the audience. One of the
many things that connect Kapil with his audience is the setting of the
show. Kapil’s comedy is played bang in the middle of Kapil/Bittu
Sharma’s so called house. In real life each house nurtures and
negotiates their imperfect inhabitants—mavericks, maniacs, obsessed
and deluded members with indulgence, shocks, exasperation and with
final resignation terahain to merahain.
In Bittu’s house his crazy family members are perennially
stuck in hilarious situations, be it the diva wife, meddlesome filmy
dadi or unmarried eccentric bua. Bittu Sharma himself is not the
epitome of virtue either but loses no opportunity to criticise other
members. Bittu has his choicest gaaliand comments for them but more
often than not enjoys their antics and takes active part in their
foolhardy. Where ever Bittu goes his house follows, even when he
played a supporting anchor in one of the episodes of Big Boss . His
team had a cameo performance with Salman Khan.
House is always important for Kapil be it Big Boss’s or of
Bittu Sharma’s.House has an iconic identity in every human mind.
Everybody loves a house .That’s why when Kapil’s house (set) gutted in
electric short circuit) Kapil got overwhelming response from his fans
in terms of help offered to rebuild it including offers from
personalities like LataMangeskar, Shahrukh Khan .
In this mad and loveable house, Kapil unleashes a galaxy of Bollywood
divas, dudes, super heroes, item girl, glam heroines, die-hard
villains, dancers, directors, singers, choreographers every night.
None of them are there just to grind their axe but to be an active
player in the show.
If Bua is obsessed with finding her marriage partner, a Rohit
Shetty or Sharukh Khan is no less obsessed to match the expectation of
their filmy fans and audience but not at the expense of the show. They
don’t come with their customary promo packs. There was no preview,
trailer, no selling of the film in the usual filmy style. “I make
celebrities talk to people” —says Kapil. It is not scripted fun, it is
natural, spontaneous and instant, much like adds in your friend
circle.
Kapil has the cheek to ask his invited guests why they are in
the comedy show. The contrarian film maker Prakash Jha even decided to
answer the question and in the process explained the relevance of
Kapil’s show in the context of our time.
We are all living in the midst of a realistic comedy. What is
happening around is more than a comedy show.
The characters of these absurd theatres are no motley fools
but people in power, position and lead and they are destroying the
fabric of the society through an unashamed display of greed and
corruption. Kapil has the wonderful ability to move effortlessly from
the mad inner world of his family to the bad outer world of our
society and give his comedy a strong foothold in time and space.
Structurally Kapil’s show has three clear sections — the introductory
drama, the interview section and the junta section where the audience
interact with guest celebrities and also with the host.
Somewhere in his show Kapil has democratised comedy. In
traditional comedy show the comedian plays the god. He is above
everybody and enjoys the diplomatic immunity from counter attack.
Kapil allows his audience, guest, family members all to have a dig at
him and even had a good laugh at himself.
Kapil merchandise his comedy well. Coinages from his show
BabajikaThullu , Ittasatha of Dadi have been used in merchandising of
tee shirts. BabajikaThollu has been converted into a hot video song in
the show. The use of these interesting marketing devise separates
Kapil’s show from others.
Speed propels Kapil’s comedy. Kapil gets away saying anything
and everything under the sun. Before you have really got back your
reaction time he has made fun of your body shape, intelligence,
profession, talent and what not; and under the same breath he showers
compliment, appreciation, good wishes and even raises voice against
social taboos and issues like sky rocketing price, discrimination of
male and female child, corruption, abuse of power, status. He passes
offensive comments and compliments with the same disarming smile.
Kapil is a complete thaali —chatpata ,majedaar, khattameetha ,
sometimes surprisingly serious but always down to earth. Kapil has
rescued comedy from being a packaged purgative of laughter trapped in
chutkules . He has made it instant, free flowing multi flavored —full
of zindegikaswad. You cannot but ask for more.
