Ajith gets Karuna support

Chennai - Actor Ajith Kumar has been in trouble since the beginning
of this month, more so since his brave speech on February 6 at the
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's felicitation function
against political pressure on artists. But now Karunanidhi himself
has come in support of Ajith and to keep the anti-Ajith brigade at
bay.

It may be recalled that at the function Ajith had said, alluding to
the coercion in attending political functions and participating in
agitations: "We had been threatened and intimidated for non-
cooperation with our projects if we resist them." An embarrassed
Karunanidhi had said: "We are all from the family of arts. There
should be no politics in the world of films."

But later there were criticism hurled at him, except superstar
Rajnikant who stood up to applaud his speech. Many artistes,
appreciating Ajith's speech had later said that the issue would have
gone unnoticed if Ajith did not bring this up in the presence of
Karunanidhi.

Subsequently, Ajith and Rajnikant had meetings with Karunanidhi. But
those against Ajith had continued a tirade against the actor. Last
week, following criticism from stunt director Jaaguvaar Thangam,
there was an attack on Thangam's car and his wife was injured.
Thangam alleged that it was done by Ajith's supporters. Expecting
retaliation, the Government gave police protection to Ajith's
residence.

The industry associations were divided over its support to Ajith,
even as the actor stuck to his guns. He also clarified that it was
not meant to hurt anyone or that it was directed at Karunanidhi.

As the controversy raged on, Karunanidhi in a letter to his cadre on
Thursday urged that the issue should be resolved. He appealed to the
film industry to maintain decorum. He said that Ajith's speech did
raise doubts if it was directed at him and when the media focused on
this, Ajith himself met him to clarify that he had a past incident in
mind and that it was not directed at him.

"Those who have attempted to create a big issue out of this row have
been disappointed following the efforts taken by actors like
Rajnikant... The entire film industry, including those who were in
the forefront to organise that felicitation function -- directors
Rama Narayanan, Guhanathan, Sarath Kumar and Radharavi -- should vow
to maintain decorum so that no one can create even an iota of
confusion. It will give more happiness to me than the felicitation
function," Karunanidhi wrote.
