Mumbai to get a Bollywood museum

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - Get set to meet your favourite Bollywood
stars in real time and place. Live and breathe Bollywood under one
roof. Come 2008, Mumbai is going to get the first-of-its-kind museum
on Hindi cinema. This model will be followed in Delhi before being
replicated on a national and global scale.
Called Bollywood Kingdom, the museum aims to provide a unique 360-
degree touch-and-feel Bollywood experience where consumers get up
close and personal with their favourite film personality.
"We want to provide a unique experience of revisiting Bollywood in
its original historical grandeur and showcase various memorabilia of
Indian cinema," says Shailendra Singh, Jt MD, Percept Holdings, which
is setting up the project.
On offer are Hollywood-style walk throughs, hall of fame where black
and white films like Alam Ara and Mughal-e-Azam will be showcased,
Bollywood lounges and cafes, film sets, shoots, tickets, memorabilia
sourced from film makers independently, events arena, theme parks,
Bollywood rides and tours, simulator experiences, 3D virtual gaming
booths, merchandising, etc.
Film City in Mumbai's Goregaon is being tapped for this mammoth
project, which will be spread over 90,000 square feet. Already Rs 5-6
crore has been pumped into the approximately Rs 410-crore project.
Interestingly, the Walk of Fame, on the pattern of Los Angeles, will
be more interactive. For example, if a fan puts his hand on Shah Rukh
Khan's imprint, it will says, " Aapne meri dukhti rag pe haath rakh
diya ."
There will also be music launches, trailer premieres (not movie
premieres) and gig fare. Want to be part of a film song shoot? Get
the shoot recorded on a DVD and take it home. Want to savour dishes
of your favourite star? Then go to the food court that can hold 600-
700 people at a time. Cuisines will be named after stars. So be
prepared to bite into Big B, Tabu, Hrithik or Rani cuisines!
The museum will also have wax figures of stars like at Madame
Tussauds. Local artists are being roped in for this. Recently,
cricketer Yuvraj Singh had a three-hour sitting with wax on his face.
Consultants are also being hired to do research on merchandising
items to be sent to airports and small outlets globally.
Once this is successful, attention will be paid to the Bollywood
theme park which will include experiences from Don, Krrish and
Mughal-e-Azam. India's entertainment industry, in fact, has grown
colossally to around Rs 222 billion, according to KPMG. Bollywood
alone accounts for over 40% of total revenue of the Indian film
industry. And though Bollywood is what the Indian masses turn to for
entertainment, it was long felt there was no organised format or
means to consume this experience.
Unlike abroad where one can access art galleries and museums
showcasing the city's speciality, Mumbai has nothing to offer in
terms of its film industry. An ardent film buff summed it up, "You
land in Mumbai and look for Hindi cinema's presence by way of
shootings, clothes or Hall of Fame, and there's none."
And it's this segment that Bollywood Kingdom aims to target. Entry
tickets will be priced between Rs 200-600 per person with a coupon
for live events on weekends like the Gulzar, Bachchan or Naushad
week. "The fees should allow everyone to feel Bollywood. It won't be
only an elite experience," says Shailendra. Something to look forward
