Monday,25 January 2010

Bangalore: Those using fake and forged documents in the U.S. can now be
traced easily, thanks to a new software developed by Dr. Gaurav Gupta from
Kurukshetra in Haryana. The software and methodology developed by Dr. Gupta
helps to identify and quantify imperfections and lead investigators to the
devices used for producing fake documents and digital signatures.

According to Dr. Gupta, the perpetrators of such crimes were ignorant of the
fact that the imperfection was unique to each device. "The system will help
us locate the source and even the scanner and printer used to commit the
forgery," he said. Recently, the young 30-year-old scientist was honored by
the former President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, during the 97th Indian Science
Congress at Thiruvananthapuram.

According to him, the basic idea of this software is that no two printing
machines or scanners will give identical outputs. "There will be several
differences in residual patterns which can be found on the suspected
document in identical machines. These patterns are results of mechanical
imperfection of each device which are not visible to naked eye," he adds.

most countries have aging population, and you know the missionaires wouldn't
have any interest there:):):)

So an Indian has found a way to fight against identity fraud? Cool,
comes a little way to balancing the fact that Indian call-centres have
been caught out time and again selling people's credit card details..
Not very far, but it's a start.
