Asha strikes false note with 'Machhar Raj'

Mumbai - Veteran singer Asha Bhosale may have repeatedly clarified
her "Machhar Raj..." Twitter comment but Maharashtra Navnirman Sena
(MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has become the butt of jokes, that too at a
time when he is already under severe flak from various quarters for
his unsavoury comments blaming migrants for the outbreak of malaria.

A day after she clarified several times that her Twitter comment was
not directed against the MNS chief, senior Congress minister Narayan
Rane's son Nitesh Rane made the most of the "Machhar Raj..."
controversy to take a dig at Shiv Sena's executive president Uddhav
Thackeray.

Nitesh, whose father was an erstwhile Shiv Sena leader and a close
associate of both Raj and Uddhav in the not-so-distant past, tweeted
on Wednesday morning, "Machhar Raj is anytime better than Uddhav
Raj!!". Nitesh's earlier comment on his Twitter page was: "Wonder
when the malaria bug will bite the Thackareys as they seem to be the
'spread malaria' brand ambassadors!!"

Nitesh, president of Swabh-imaan Sangathana, has taken on the Shiv
Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its
"incompetence" in fighting the spread of malaria.

Nitesh rooted for the Sena-BJP alliance bowing out of the office in
Asia's biggest civic body. "The Shiv Sena-BJP combine has no right to
remain in power in the BMC if it cannot attend to the basic problems
of Mumbaikars," he said.

Not usually known for raking up controversies, Asha Bhosale
unwittingly stirred hornet's nest at 11.49 am on Tuesday, by
tweeting: "Machhar" Raj...". Four minutes later, she clarified in
another tweet, "I meant too many buzzing around and flying around..."
Having realised that her first comment might lead to a controversy,
she tweeted four minutes later once again, saying, "I was not
referring to Raj Thackeray".

By then, she had already triggered a controversy. No wonder that the
whole of her Tuesday afternoon went in clarifying her first Twitter
comment.

On his part, Raj has chosen to remain silent. Nor has the MNS has
officially reacted.

When contacted, MNS general secretary and Raj's close aide Shirish
Parkar said on Wednesday, "Since she has herself clarified that her
tweet was not against the MNS chief, we have nothing to say in the
matter."
