The Aditya Birla Foundation has announced the recipients of the
prestigious Kala Awards for 2008. The legendary flautist, composer,
musicologist, choreographer and poet Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao was honored
this year with the Kala Shikhar Lifetime Achievement Award. Previous
honorees include legendary vocalist Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and the queen of
voices Smt. Lata Mangeshkar. The Kala Kiran award - meant to honor
rising stars in the artistic galaxy - was bestowed on noted sitarist
Shri Purbayan Chatterjee and promising flautist Shri Rakesh Chaurasia.
On Sunday, November 16, a felicitation function was held at the East
Lawns of the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai to honor the recipients.
The Honorable Governor of Maharashtra Shri S.C. Jamir presented the
recipients with their awards. Star singer and composer Sonu Nigam
presented a thrilling three hour set of his songs to enthrall invited
guests.The Aditya Birla Foundation has prepared a special VCD to
commemorate the function and the honorees.
